Just when you thought you had every single release:

Maximum Cowbell

Track Listings

1. (Don't Fear) The Reaper
2. Mississippi Queen
3. Working for the Weekend - Loverboy
4. We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister
5. Low Rider
6. Play That Funky Music - Wild Cherry
7. Evil Ways
8. Coconut
9. Evil Woman - Electric Light Orchestra
10. Time Has Come Today - The Chambers Brothers
11. Burning Love - Elvis Presley
12. Spinning Wheel - Blood, Sweat & Tears
13. Free-For-All - Ted Nugent
14. Hold Your Head Up
15. Games People Play - The Alan Parsons Project
16. Frankenstein - The Edgar Winter Group

The really funny (and somewhat sad) thing is the fact that I just ordered it. It really is a great complilation of some cool songs.

One of the greatest-ever SNL sketches. Is this a legit release?

I was surprised to find that it is, and it's available from amazon -- though at import prices.

Cheapest copy I could find was $14, with $3.99 for shipping. I'm trying to decide whether a novelty album is worth full retail or not. Thinking maybe my interest in it will turn out to be a passing fancy.

Doc,
Not only is elvissessions.com correct, but there is also a volume II in the works.

Jerry Carrigan would have slotted in nicely with the Blue Oyster Cult.

Bizarre idea for an album, but seems like a great compilation anyway!

But as much as I love the cowbell on "Burning Love", when that "sandpaper" (what's it called?) comes in on "I've Got A Thing About You Baby" - now that is a great moment. Maybe that's an idea for another album!

The best utilizer of the cowbell was the Procol Harum drummer BJ Wilson.

Sounds like an egg shaker. As much as I like this version, Tony Joe White's original smokes it.

I'm a big fan of both White, Jerry Reed (whose "A Thing Called Love" is superior to Elvis' version to these ears and other of that ilk, but I always find I have a hard time saying that any of them "smoked" anything about Elvis... :D

As for the cowbell comp, very funny and yes, one of the better skits on SNL...!

Yes, it's for real:
"Don't fear the cowbell. Once a herding tool for wandering beasts and later a percussion pariah, the humble rhythm tool is now hip. With the release of Maximum Cowbell, a 16-track collection of classic rock songs that employ its trademark hollow clank, the cultish fascination that began with a Saturday Night Live skit in 2000 grows."

All things considered (such as licensing), they did a good job in assembling most of the tracks associated with this "genre" !

And it's kind of cool that people who might pick this up as a gag - and for classic rocking tunes- are also getting one of Elvis' biggest and most rocking tunes....

Thanks for the clip, Eagle!

It's on the "Saturday Night Live: The Best of Will Ferrell" DVD -- and worth the price of admission all by itself:

- VH1 Behind the Music: Blue Oyster Cult
- Spartan Cheerleaders (leading a chess match)
- "Dissing Your Dog" commercial
- the Harry Carey Show
- the professor and his lover (w/Rachel Dratch)
- the homeless nude male model
- "Jeopardy" (w/'Burt Reynolds,' 'French Stewart' and 'Sean Connery'
- Robert Goulet does gangsta rap
- Bobby and Marty Culp at a Drug Awareness seminar
- "Inside the Actor's Studio" interview w/'Charles Nelson Reilly' (Alec Baldwin)
- the "Roxbury guys" (w/Jim Carrey)

"Saturday Night Live: The Best of Will Ferrell" runs 72 minutes and includes Will's audition tape, an unaired dress rehearsal sketch, two NBC-TV Conan O'Brian interviews, and a photo gallery.

New Musical Express, January 1st 1977:

"Rumours that Gene Frenkle has split from Blue Oyster Cult gained more momentum last night when he crashed Elvis Presley's New Year Concert at Pittsburgh. Demonstrating the selfishness that dominated BOC's latest hit Frenkle came in too late for the rock and roll classic Jailhouse Rock. Shocked that he was loosing the limelight Elvis backing vocalist Sherril Neilsen inflated his spandex jumpsuit and responded with a two minute solo of the esperanto classic "O Bovo Mio" while Frenkle was lured off stage with a Ronnie Tutt drumstick.
Such anarchic moments must surely represent the future of music!
" - Julie Birchill.

Please bear with me, but this 'cowbell' album....

Is it:

a] A compilation of tracks on which a cowbell was originally featured.

b] A compilation of tracks with extra cowbell overdubs.

c] Neither.

I think I should be told !
