US forces gang raped and murdered girl (14), court told

A US military court in Baghdad has heard graphic testimony of how three US soldiers took turns raping a 14-year-old Iraqi girl before murdering her and her family.

At the hearing into whether four US soldiers should be court-martialled for rape and murder, a special agent described what took place in Mahmudiya in March, based on an interview he had with one of the men, Specialist James Barker.

The case, the fifth involving serious crimes being investigated by the US military in Iraq, has outraged Iraqis and led Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki to call for a review of foreign troops' immunity from prosecution under Iraqi law.

Special Agent Benjamin Bierce recalled that Specialist Barker described to him how they put a couple and their six-year-old daughter into a bedroom in their home, but kept the teenage girl in the living room, where Specialist Barker held her hands while Sergeant Paul Cortez raped her or tried to rape her.

Specialist Barker then switched positions with Sgt Cortez and attempted to rape the girl but said he was not sure if he had done so, Bierce told the hearing.

Specialist Barker also told the special agent he heard shots from the bedroom and shortly afterwards Private Steven Green emerged from the room, put down an AK-47 assault rifle and raped the girl while Sgt Cortez held her down.

Specialist Barker told Agent Bierce that Pte Green then picked up the weapon and shot her once, paused, and shot her several more times.

Military prosecutors are expected to set out their case against Private First Class Jesse Spielman (21), Specialist Barker (23), Sgt Cortez (23) and Private First Class Bryan Howard (19) who face charges of rape and murder among others.

I wonder if this will this get much publicity in the States?

In case it needs to be said -- and I hope it doesn't -- behavior like this is abhorrent to Americans just as much as -- if not more than -- it is for people overseas.

I say "more than" because it's shameful to us and a terrible insult to our fine armed forces, arguably the best-trained, most-disciplined forces in the world.

Yes, I'm a big critic of Bush and the Iraq war, but I'd expect virtually every American agrees with me on this subject.

Don't worry, this atrocity has gotten intense, daily attention in the media and has horrified people on both sides of the war debate.

I expect that inevitably it will have some impact on public perceptions of the war, even in our own country.

But at some basic level we must remember that there are criminals in every group, be it a nation or an army.

The key is how the criminals are dealt with, and the fact is that in many nations and wars behavior such as this has been the rule, rather than the exception. One obvious example is Bosnia, of course, where rape was a tactic of war.

I believe all of these men will be dealt with harshly and they shouldn't be a reflection on the excellent military forces of the United States, most of whom are engaged in an effort to do as much good and little harm as possible.

This kind of behaviour only adds fuel to the fire and gives those fighting against the US and excuse to retaliate to a much greater degree............Let's say the kidnapping and shocking torture and beheading of two US soldiers in June. Don't these guys realize what outcomes their gutless actions could have on their fellow soldiers !

Apes evolved into humans, others only evolved into cavemen.

Mirrors my opinion. And I still remember the horribly burnt corpses of two Americans, who the Iraqi mob displayed at a bridge pillar. And last week the generals spoke of a possible civil war infront the Senate committee, while Donald Rumsfeld was also concerned about Muslims running over Spain. If anyone knows what he was trying to say, please let me know. And Afghanistan is getting worse again, Al Quaeda probably never really left the region. NATO troops are getting attacked.
