"Pet Sounds" 40th Anniversary Ed. in August!

Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:29 am

NME reports that Capitol will release a fortieth anniversary edition of The Beach Boys' classic Pet Sounds album on August 28, featuring two discs, one of them a DVD:

The Beach Boys are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of their classic 'Pet Sounds' album with a special re-issue which includes previously unheard material and DVD footage.

The 27 track LP, which hits record stores nationwide on August 28, includes bonus track 'Hang On To Your Ego', an early version of the album's 'I Know There's An Answer' recorded during the original Pet Sounds sessions but not included in the album's track listing.

The release also includes a DVD which features a behind the scenes documentary, 'The Making Of Pet Sounds; Pet Stories'.

There is also a previously unreleased 1966 promotional firehouse film clip for 'Good Vibrations' and original 1966 promotional black and white clips for Sloop John B and Pet Sounds.

Elsewhere the DVD features a rare BBC documentary and a photo gallery.

'Pet Sounds' will also be available to download digitally alongside a series of video downloads.

Amazon reveals that there will be two versions of this edition, one in a standard jewel case, and one in a deluxe "fuzzy package." I have included pictures of both below, click on each picture for their respective pages on Amazon:

Play reveals that the entire album will also be presented in 24-bit stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 on the DVD:

Bonus DVD:
The Making Of Pet Sounds
Pet Stories
Rhythm Of Life - Sir George Martin & Brian Wilson in the studio
Good Vibrations - Original 1966 color promo film
Sloop John B - Original 1966 b&w promo film
Pet Sounds - Original 1966 b&w promo film
God Only Knows - Synched to photo gallery
Pet Sounds original track sequence in 24-bit stereo mix
Pet Sounds original track sequence in Dolby Digital 5.1 mix

Sounds exciting! Does anyone know if the two audio tracks included on the DVD will be identical to the contents of the DVD-A released in 2003? And how come this hasn’t received more attention? Pet Sounds is listed as one of the greatest albums of all time frequently enough!

Now we just have to wait for Revolver to come out on an edition like this…

EDIT: Minor grammar mistakes.

Being the 40th anniversary of this masterpiece, personally I have been wondering when news of any release would be issued. Having the box set, two CD versions as well as the audio/video DVD, I'm wondering what else could possibly be left to exploit. The Beach Boys still have some great stuff still wasting away in the vaults wating to see the light of day. Waiting for such releases is almost like wating for a DVD release of EOT ! Still, such a release is great news for any die hard collector.

Thanks for that piece Pete !

True Pete. When Capitol re-released the BB's catalogue in 1990 it was obvious that a lot of thought, care and dedication was put in. The sound, presentation, enclosed booklet, linear notes, bonus tracks etc. was something that I have not seen since. It seems that BMG (Elvis) and EMI (Beatles) could learn a thing or two from these BB releases from 16 years ago !

Has anyone checked out Brian Wilsons Smile yet? Best music album in years. The DVD is fantastic too..

Capitol keeps rehashing this brilliant album. It is a page out of the BMG Elvis handbook. The 3cd Pet Sounds boxset is all anyone needs.

Now if only Capitol could get permission to release more outtakes of the original SMILE sessions.
