Hockey great Stevie Y retires

Mon Jul 03, 2006 10:51 pm

Not sure how many people are aware of who Steve Yzerman is, but he retired today. Words cannot describe the heart, passion, skill and class he brought to the Detroit Red Wings and the NHL for 22 years. For us who've followed his whole career, it's truly a sad day. They talk about all-time great team leaders and players in sports history, this man ranks among the best. His performance in the 2002 winter olympics ( where he basically played on one leg leading team Canada to a gold medal ), ranks among the most heroic in sports history. Goodbye Stevie Y, hopefully you'll enjoy your much deserved retirement.

Sorry to hear that, Joe, but it's not a surprise. Stevie Y was a great player for many years, and, he did it quietly and with great class.

On an Elvis related note, that trophy he's holding is the Conn Smythe trophy for MVP in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Conn Smythe built Maple Leaf Gardens, where Elvis played during his Toronto shows ... the building is duplicated on top of the trophy.

Sadly, the building was sold and plans to be developed into condos ... the Leafs now play at the ACC (Air Canada Centre).
