Format Battle !

Wed Apr 19, 2006 4:37 pm

Looks like quite a battle is lining up for the new 'High Definition' replacement for DVD !

The Sony-led Blu-ray system discs can hold 50GB.

The Toshiba-led HD DVD system discs hold 30GB.

The present standard DVD disc holds under 5GB.

Companies backing Sony are: Samsung, Dell, Apple, Disney and 20th Century Fox.

Companies backing Toshiba are: NEC, Sanyo, Microsoft, Intel and Universal Studios.

The Sony Playstation 3 [due in November] will feature Blu-ray as standard.

Needless to say, whichever system we plumb for, we'll need to splash out on new players too !

Let battle commence !

With a bit of luck PC's can play it all.........

With Disney in their corner, Sony definitely has the advantage. If you will recall, it was Disney's backing of VHS over Beta that doomed the latter format. Say what you will, but Disney still holds a tremendous amount of power and influence in this industry. From what I have seen, Blu-Ray is far superior to the others, but just wait til you see what's coming around the bend. This is far from over.

The current PC-mounted DVD players & writers can't handle the new formats.

No doubt they soon will.

But how far away is it ?

I mean, should we ignore the Blu-ray/HD DVD tussle & wait for their replacement ?

I don't want to get burned like I did with Betamax.

That's good to know. Thanks.

Nice avatar. It was that EP which really got me started as a fan :)

Glad you like it! Also the DVDs will look better than before because of upscaling to 1080i/1080p.

Never bet against Toshiba, especially with dvd innovations.

My Toshiba rep tells me that all blue ray players will be
backwards compatible with red laser technology.

I'm sure there are still stockrooms sitting around with Sony
DAT machines and Beta tape players ... Disney notwithstanding,
I'll gamble on a blue ray machine with an HDMI output hooked
up to my 50" LCD ... now I'm waiting for On Tour to be given
the full treatment, and I'm good to go.

The Blu-ray machines will also have an on/off switch Carolyn. So you'll feel at home!!!

70% of my movie collection is still vhs, lol.

it looks like i'll have a 3 format collection pretty soon.

then i'll have to upgrade my vhs/dvd dual player to a vhs/dvd/blu-ray one.
