Boy these trascripts are depressing. The callers are of course edited out.

etc...

I read that so many of the operators never came to work the next day.

I just thought that I would share, but I for one am not going to turn this pollitical. To me, this is yet another reminder that we must all count our blessings. Whoever's "fault" it is, doesn't change the fact that not only did many many people died, but they SUFFERED. To BURN alive is a terrible terrible concept and I cannot say what I would have done. I hate when people are called "suicide jumpers" in that situation.

That isn't SUICIDE, that is choosing a better CERTAIN death.

R.I.P. to the people that were loved and lost.

Yes they are depressing. I work as an attorney for the New York City Law Department and some of my colegaues prepared (and argued against) the release of these tapes.

Personally, I hope we remember what happened that dreadful and take the necessary to prevent it from happening again. Its an American issue no what side of the political isle you sit.

Indeed.

And "suicide bombers" sounds hollow to me. It doesn't even begin to describe the depravity and inhumanity of their actions. How about "homicide bombers" -- or just "maniacs"?

Yes. I'm not going to read those transcripts for now. But absolutely.

I've read people are really upset that the transcripts are incomplete, perhaps those who fought to get them released through the FOIA. They wanted to achieve closure on the situtation, and cannot.

Why were these edited?

They were edited to remove the voices of the victims making the phone calls. The City needs the permission of the victims families to include these in the recordings. Three families have so far given consent.

The City fought release of the tapes on various grounds, including privacy for the victims. Some 140 people called, but the City can onlyt identify 28 victims from the tapes of these 140. The New York Times filed suit to release these. After various appeals and rulings, the tapes were released, but the presiding judge stated that the victims' voices were to be removed unless permission of their families was given.

That and the fact that you can hear them dying!

Same goes for the Columbine tapes being edited and in some cases "lost"..like the library tapes.
