RIP Al Lewis

Sun Feb 05, 2006 5:13 pm

Well we have lost another great from the golden era of television. Al Lewis who played grandpa in The Munsters has left the building at aged 95. Also, remember "Car 54, where are you?" They don't make them like they used to !

The old guy hung in there a looooong time, and will be missed. I love the way he embraced the characters which he was known to play, unlike so many others.

CNN states that he was 83. I thought he was older than that.

From The People UK Sunday newspaper:

The age of '95' is based on his claim to have been born in 1910.

His family say this was just for showbusiness purposes and his true birthdate was 1923, making him 83 this year.

And he was quite visible and active in his last years in New York...

RIP, Gramps.

I did a radio interview with Al a couple of years back. He was, without a doubt, the epitome of a "dirty old man". He told some of the raunchiest jokes I've ever heard (95% of which were unairable) and was flirting, quite unabashedly, with my young producer. It was great!!!!
