Two "new" Sam Cooke tracks

Tue Oct 18, 2005 10:19 am

I just found and heard these today, at a Tower Records listening station.

On the new CD "Les Paul and Friends", two Sam Cooke vocals have all-new backing tracks:

(Ain't That) Good News - Jeff Beck and Les Paul

(Somebody) Ease My Troubled Mind - Eric Clapton and Les Paul

Les Paul actually does very little on these tracks.

I'm not a huge Sam Cooke fan, and these two tracks in their original form never really made my playlist. But these two new versions are excellent and sound fresh and timeless to my tired ears, particularly "Ain't That Good News", which all Elvis fans might enjoy. That one makes my playlist, for now.

The whole CD in total is a mishmash but that's a different story.

This is Les Paul's first studio recording since 1978 or so (the final Chester and Lester sessions).

In other news, abkco has finally released most of the best of the original Cameo-Parkway material. (And should anyone care, I saw and held Hitstory - and left it there.)
