Wed Sep 07, 2005 6:41 am

Hey Guys

There is a country song made back in the early 80's I thing that is self proclaimed the best country song ever made.

It is funny because it contains all the elements that make a country song great....Truck, Breakup, Drinking...etc....

Any help would be great!

Not one of my favorites by any means, but here you go.

You Never Even Call Me By My Name
David Allan Coe
Doug Supernaw
Written by: Steve Goodman
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was all I could do to keep from cryin'
Sometimes it seemed so useless to remain
But you don't have to call me darlin' darlin'
You never even call me by my name.

You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
And you don't have to call me Charley Pride
And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard anymore
Even though you're on my fighting side.

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain
But you don't have to call me darlin' darlin'
You never even call me by my name.

Spoken:

I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in the pickup truck
She got ran over by a damned old train.

So I'll hang around as long as you will let me
And I never minded standin' in the rain
You don't have to call me darlin' darlin'
You never even call me....
Well I wonder why you don't call me...
Why don't you ever call me by my name.

David Allen Coe had another hit song titled "If That Ain't Country", where it had the line "Coal burning stoves no natural gas and if that ain't country I'll kiss your a$$". Gotta love a song like that lol

Here's a few more c&w rarities:

You Stole My Tractor and Drove Myself To Drinkin'
Dropkick Me Jesus Through The Goal Post Of Life
My gut has love handles so carry me home tonight
If you wanta play you bring the hay
If the good lord's willin then he can leave me Arizona
If your ma was a mudhole I'd stomp her dry

:P :P :P :P :P :P

And they should!

Too much of today's country sounds like Billy Joel, Journey or Kiss with a slight twang!

The voted number one country song of all time for male and female is:

He Stopped Loving Her Today - George Jones
Stand By Your Man - Tammy Wynette

At any self-respecting bar in Texas, when "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" is played on the juke box, evryone sings along and adds some "let me's" after Coe sings "let me".

I noticed Doug Supernaw listed, seems he also recorded the tune. As far as I know, Doug is best known for his cover of Kenny Rogers' "I Don't Call Him Daddy" and "Reno".

Doug is a Bryan, Texas native(like me) but has recently been in a downward spiral, with quite a few arrests to his name.

Anyone ever heard this one recorded by Doug?

What'll You Do About Me

Writers: Dennis Linde

All you wanted was a one night stand
The fire of the wine and the touch of a man
But I fell in love and ruined all of your plans
What'll you do about me
Imagine the faces on your high class friends
When I beat on the door and I beg to come in
Screamin' "Come on love me again"
What'll you do about me

1st Chorus:

You can change your number you can change your name
You can ride like Hell on a midnight train
That's alright Mama, that's o.k.
But what'll you do about me

Picture your neighbors when you try to explain
That good ol' boy standin' out in the rain
With his nose on the window pane
Lady, what'll you do about me
What in the world are you plannin' to do
When a man comes over just to visit with you
And I'm on the porch with a 2' by 2'
Tell me what'll you do about me

2nd Chorus:

You can call your lawyer you can call the Fuzz
You can sound the alarm - wake the neighbors up
Ain't no way to stop a man in love
What'll you do about me

Solo:

All you wanted was a one night stand
The fire of the wine and the touch of a man
But I fell in love and Baby here I am
What'll you do about me

Repeat 1st Chorus

I like very much George Jones. He has a very good vocal and I will check these songs you posted Rob.

Scotch, Dennis "Burning Love" Linde still has it!

I'll have to give that a listen.

Dennis Linde has also written a recent hit titled "The Talkin' Song Repair Blues," which Alan Jackson recorded. The hits just keep on comin'!!
