Screened A Bridge Too Far for the first time on Monday.
Absolutely colossal in magnitude and importance.
The lesson is the same one Napoleon learned invading
Russia: never go beyond your supply lines. I read
that the film failed to attract audiences, because of Vietnam
and because it is a downbeat account of a military disaster.
So to these people it is not important to portray the horrors
of war and the effect on individuals?
My grasp of the plot is a bit vauge, because the tactics are
not made clear enough, so its easy to get lost as to which
troops are going where, what they're doing and why.
Graced by an unusually brilliant cast, the film was obviously
an enormous undertaking, and it looks very expensive and
highly impressive. A major plus are the diffrent languages.
German, Dutch subtitled. This certainly adds to the realism.
The logistical challenge for Attenborough and his crew must
have been extraordinary. Yet without falling back on flashy
effects (and not having the luxury of CGI), the filmmakers
managed to create a sense of the scale of the battle and
the technical challenges involved with the operation.

Mel,
I fall in love with you more and more with every post!! Not to worry, though, I'm not insane.......and neither am I.
Seriously, if you are truly interested in reading about Operation Market Garden, may I recommend Cornelius Ryan's epic A BRIDGE TOO FAR : THE CLASSIC HISTORY OF THE GREATEST AIRBORNE BATTLE OF WORLD WAR II. I would have to say that this book, along with Ryan's THE LONGEST DAY: THE CLASSIC EPIC OF D-DAY and LAST BATTLE : THE CLASSIC HISTORY OF THE BATTLE FOR BERLIN are three of the best written, best researched books on WWII I have read.
