I watched these two films last week. Beyond The Sea: A very good film, but the somewhat off-the-wall structure Kevin Spacey chose to tell the story takes some getting used to. Spacey produced, directed, starred (which included doing his own singing and dancing), and co-wrote, which is quite an achievement. And yet ..... Spacey didn't really remind me that much of Bobby Darin, he came across to me as Kevin Spacey in Bobby Darin make-up and wardrobe. But I was impressed with Spacey's singing talent. I also was surprised and impressed by the good performance of Kate Bosworth as Sandra Dee. And Bob Hoskins remains one of the very best character actors. The film did serve to focus attention on the underappreciated, multi-talented Darin.
Ray: Jaimey Foxx became Ray Charles. The film pulled no punches in depicting the good, the bad, and the ugly in the life of one of the true giants of 20th century popular music.
