Tom Jones Sydney 4thApril 2024
Tom put out a very good 110 minute show tonight and in excellent strong voice throughout. He does a wide range of songs from Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan,Cat Stephens, Dusty Springfield,Prince etc as well as his "standards" like Delighla , green green grass of home and It's not unusual. Good backing band and a packed audience.A lot of his songs are very deep and meaningful. HE does not move much anymore and leans back on a stool for most of the show, but that tremendous voice is still great. He did talk a little about his first time in Sydney being watched in rehearsal by a policeman and at the very end after a full version of Johnny B.Goode( pre ceeded by an Elvis Story about Elvis calling Chuck Berry the true king of Rock n' Roll.) Finally he thanked the band and the audience before saying God bless and goodbye. Well worth seeing and maybe my last time?

Re: Tom Jones Sydney 4thApril 2024
Great review buddy!! The story about his telling Jones the true King of R& being Berry, could have referred to conversations they had after they both saw Berry, separately, I nreckon, at the Casino Theater which means it had to be AFTER he flattered Fats Domino with a similar attribute, and that was on August 1, 1969. Whatever, I wish I had been there, Down under, and would cartainly have asked hm to sing "Treat her right".

Tom Jones will be here in Sao Paulo, Brazil next week if I'm not mistaken. I won't be able to attend but I'm pretty sure he still puts a great show.

See that goal´post at the left center of the first photo ? On a Sunday in late October of 1964, ( I just had turned 14), when our school's goalie was hurt badly at just before the end of the first half and as I was watching from the sidelines, actually out since three weeks earlier with a broken ankle and a cast all the way to my knee to show for it, I then volunteered to came in as goalie, and got five goals past me, LOL, in that same goal post, in as little 45 minutes. But the rest of the team did what they had to do and we won 9-5 to Dante Alighieri, our sort of neighbors. In 1964, Sao Luis was the top grammar, middle and high school noyt just i Sao Paulo, but in all of Brazil, by far, and no one knew who Tom Jones was. He became known the year after., Today, Dante Alighieri is the best, and everyone knows Tom. LOL

Waiting for all the complainers to go on a rant about Tom singing covers of other artists music…….
More seriously, it’s great to hear that he is still putting on a solid show!

Seen Tom four times and he's never disappointed. The worst show was in Las Vegas, though. The crowd was dead, absolutely D-E-A-D. No matter how much he put into a song they could barely applaud or cheer afterward.
It's like they'd spent their lives in front of a TV set, never a living, breathing, thrilling live performer. I wanted to assault every single one of them.
This is how Vegas kills the soul of a great artist. Case-in-point: Elvis playing seven days a week for a month.

Re: Tom Jones Sydney 4thApril 2024
Seeing and hearing Tom, I can't help but think of my mom. He was her favorite (she even had his poster in her room). Went with her 2 or 3 times to see him in concert in Montreal (I actually made an AR of one of the shows). Always a great show. Nice that Tom is still with us. Wish I could say the same about my mom....
Elvis fan. From Sun to Sundial.

Good one YDKM. I have to ask - Where about was your vantage point? Near the right side looking across , the left side, or central?

6th row on the right side, an excellent view...cost me A$250 though! Still was well worth it for a more 'unusual' version of "It's not Unusual".

Glad to see he's still out there and performing so well. Saw him 10 years ago in Hyde Park and he was terrific. Think he did "Tomorrow Night".

Wonderful show in Buenos Aires, very heavy on newer album cuts and very light on the vintage hits. Tom was in amazing voice.

Re: Tom Jones Sydney 4thApril 2024
The strawman returns to attempt yet another jealous, witless "gotcha."
Why do you continue to do this? It's sad.
Fact: Tom Jones and Elvis Presley approached their careers differently.
Tom was not booked into Las Vegas the way Elvis was, 7 days a week for a month, two shows per day, two visits per year. And, unlike Presley, Jones performed all across the U.S. and internationally, while also having a TV program for several years.
After Elvis passed, Tom's recording career was on the wane, but he persevered, ultimately having a resurgence in the studio and on stage in the late 1980s-early 1990s which propelled him to new projects and successes. He had new challenges, and met them.
He played the UK's Glastonbury Festival, hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards, cut a duets album with a variety of younger acts that was a major hit, worked with Wyclef Jean and Van Morrison on different projects, made numerous TV and film appearances, performed at Wembley Stadium at the Concert for Diana, became a regular on the UK edition of "The Voice," and on, and on, and on.
This kind of career path allows the musical soul to flourish. If only Elvis could have charted a course in the same fashion.

Re: Tom Jones Sydney 4thApril 2024
You take everything so personally. It was a simple point that Vegas does not kill the soul, or somehow stunt creativity. It is how you use it, and how much creativity that was put into the performances.drjohncarpenter wrote: ↑Wed Apr 17, 2024 7:01 pm

Such a generalised statement about Vegas is both incorrect and simply biased by a mind that has come to its conclusion without actually looking at the facts. The facts are that many thrived in Vegas creatively, including some of the best live performers.
Vegas didn't kill Elvis's soul, Elvis did. He had zero interest in taking the blank canvas given to him and making something creative and unique from it. Even in 1969, he simply got on stage and sang, often with the most basic of arrangements. And he did exactly the same thing on tour. He could have hired the best directors and producers and arrangers, but he didn't, and neither did those around him encourage him to. That wasn't Vegas's fault, it was Elvis's.
Accused of being "a nerd in his 20s." I wish.
