The FTD Catalogue – ‘Burbank ’68’ and Beyond…
Hello all, after reading and enjoying the ‘What is the recent FTD you have bought or listened to?’ thread and other similar type threads on other forums, it gave me an idea for a more communal FTD thread if you’d care to join me. Yes, each couple of weeks or so, weather permitting and all that, we can take a look at the embarrassment of riches that the FTD catalogue is, from the very beginning! Share with me your favourite songs, disappointments, guilty pleasures (I know ‘guilty pleasures’ is a love/hate phrase but on this thread - we’ll love it!) and maybe a few recollections of first purchasing the said disc, whether at the time or months, even years later. A few short words, entire sentences or indeed a full-on dissertation is all that is required to join the discussion! Above all though, please respect others opinions even though they are obviously dead wrong!
Why? I hear you ask. “Well, we all do it…” I reply and continue. Buy a particular FTD, listen to it once or twice then shelve it. Well, here’s your chance to take it from that shelf, blow off the dust and give it an extra listen on your CD player to share your views with us all. Or indeed, find it on your hard drive and stream it to your ‘Pod or some tin-pot speakers or £££/$$$ worth of Hi-Fi equipment. It doesn’t matter, as long as you stick to the FTD we are all talking about.
Oh and FTD numbering, I’ll do my best to stick to some kind of order but I still can’t get my head around which really came first or what, once everything got r-e-a-l going, so between the Elvis Shop London, Now Dig This, Elvis On CD and elvispresleyftd.com I’ve come to some kind of hybrid solution. When there was a bunch of FTD’s released in one go I’ll use the catalogue numbers if possible to identify the first release. Fret not though friends it’s not going to be hard science, we’ll allow ourselves to be a little ‘floopy’ over the numbering! Here's what I've got so far...

Phew!

Although we should cover the FTD books, since the vinyl releases largely contain already released material covered on the CD’s, there is no real need to discuss them within this particular topic. CD’s that were released after they were part of a book combo however, can be discussed as separate entities at the right time.
I am no expert by the way. At all. Just a punter. I never did the bootleg route so the FTD label is all I know for rare Elvis, mainstream releases notwithstanding.

Right then let’s get started!
Take yourself back before the internet (well in our house anyway!) when Amazon was just a jungle somewhere, eBay was a saying usually followed by ‘gum’ around our neck of the woods and PayPal was something you did on payday after borrowing from a friend earlier on in the month. Yes, mail order and cheques were the norm for me back then and after years of rumours, out of the blue on a sunny July day, well it may have been raining but go with me, an announcement appeared in various Elvis mags…

Follow That Dream Records - 1999 Announcement*
6/17/1999

To serve the dedicated Elvis collector business in a more strategic way, RCA Records and its parent company, Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG), are pleased to announce the test marketing of an officially endorsed collectors label. Repertoire will be issued on behalf of RCA/BMG by Follow That Dream Records (FTD).
Its mandate is to complement the commercial and artistic level of RCA's retail release schedule by issuing repertoire that is considered unsuitable for mainstream use. This special material is being marketed directly to serious Elvis collectors through fan clubs, specialist magazines, specialist retailers and dedicated mail order companies.
The FTD label will not be canvassing directly to any regular retail outlets, however, any non-USA retailer wanting stock will be able to acquire it directly from FTD or from designated fan clubs in their area. In America, Elvis Presley's Graceland will be the exclusive distributor through its retail stores at Graceland and through its mail order operation.
This series has been instigated for the following reasons:
1. To make artistically and historically important material available for the dedicated collector. This will allow RCA's main retail focus to be maintained and ensure that Elvis' actual masters and substantial outtake material do not confuse general record consumers.
2. To create and promote product that satisfies the insatiable appetite of fans for material. It is also appreciated that the extraordinary maintenance of Elvis' dedicated fan base by committed individuals needs commercial support to ensure survival.
3. To steer fans away from buying illegal (bootleg) product. The volume of unofficial audio product in the market place has reached a level which BMG and the Elvis Presley Estate can no longer tolerate. As announced separately, BMG Entertainment International, the RCA Records label and the Estate of Elvis Presley intend to vigorously prosecute any company or individual who violates their copyrights, trademarks and other rights. Products have recently been seized and all conventions, record fairs, mail order operations and other activities will be monitored closely.
FTD plans to release three or four packages per year, providing there is sufficient interest and the producers feel assured that the releases add to the fans' enjoyment and understanding of Elvis Presley's unique recording career. In order to make this label financially possible, only product that has received enough advance orders from the distributors will be manufactured. FTD will only produce marginally more than the collective total of advance orders to avoid stock risk and warehouse expenses. Only if repeat orders from the distributors are very significant, will FTD reprint. Each release will follow a quick path: "It's coming - it's here - it's gone." Distributors, including Graceland, will receive information two to three months in advance to disseminate to the fans.
After many years of anticipation, RCA Records has proactively given the go-ahead for a collector's dream - rewarding the fans' many years of supporting the world's greatest entertainer of all time. Since 1986, when RCA became part of BMG, the company has been totally committed to excellence by instigating the complete restoration of Elvis' entire recording heritage. Both praise and criticism have been embraced honestly by RCA/BMG in an effort to do what is right. They have given producers Ernst Mikeal Jorgensen and Roger Semon nothing but total support for all these years. Both Jorgensen and Semon are honored to be custodians of this new venture. RCA Records in conjunction with FTD will work more closely with all customers who wish to continue supporting Elvis Presley in a dignified, passionate and professional way. It is the company's intention to expand commercial relationships for the new millennium. This new label is testament to its continued commitment.

So go find it, give it a spin or two and we’ll reconvene as soon as we are all ready…
If you want to, of course…

PS. I originally thought of this project several months ago and shelved the idea as ‘real life’ and other commitments took priority. ‘Real Life’ does have a habit of getting in the way, so we’ll just do our best with this one. I think it might be interesting and worthwhile.

With thanks to fellow FECC member Ken Jensen for re-igniting the flame for this communal project and giving me a gentle push.

So let’s go dig out ‘Burbank ’68’ and see what happens… 8)

PPS. Please don't quote this post, for the sake of the internet!

Thanks for starting this great thread, When In Rome. Fantastic initiative and wonderful first post. There are some mistakes in the FTD numbering. For instance, New Year’s Eve is FTD 21 and Studio B FTD 22. The three soundtracks that follow are, surprisingly, not in chronological order. I think they are Fun in Acapulco (FTD 23), Girl Happy (FTD 24), and It Happened at the World’s Fair (FTD 25).

I’ve just played Burbank ’68, the very first FTD CD. It’s fitting that something from the ’68 Comeback Special was selected to kick the whole thing off. I will play all the FTD releases more or less in chronological order and write short comments on all of them. For the most part, I’ll focus on the music. I won’t mention mistakes in the booklets, tempting as that might be.

What we have here is the June 25 rehearsal taped by Joe Esposito, plus some live selections from the stand-up shows. It’s a very good rehearsal tape, even though Elvis sounds a bit tired and strained at times, for example on "Tiger Man". Elvis is "loose" on some of the live cuts, laughing when he misses the intro to "Heartbreak Hotel". "Jailhouse Rock" is a highlight. All in all, it’a good first release, but it would have been great if they had combined the rehearsal with a complete stand-up show.

I discovered FTD in early 2002, and I ordered Burbank ’68, Tucson ’76 and It’s Midnight! from Amazon. Paid a small fortune. I was hooked even before I managed to play the discs. Fortunately, I found out that the Norwegian Elvis Presley fan club Flaming Star was back in operation shortly after ruining myself on the Amazon order, and I started subscribing to the series right away.

Excellent idea Ken, I will look forward to your thoughts on each title.

Regarding this first release, am I correct in understanding that the entire content has since been re-issued in better sound on other releases? If this is the case, could someone advise where it can be found in better quality?

It is certainly to go back in time and to look at what FTD promised and what it ultimately delivered. A loaded comment on my part, I realise, especially as many people already know my thoughts on some of the FTD catalogue and the way it has been handled. That original press release is extremely interesting nearly twenty years after it was first issued - and it shows quite clearly how FTD has succeeded, and failed, over the last eighteen years, and how most of its failures is in steering away from that original intent.
I think that, as this thread works through the releases from the beginning to the end, that it will become noticeable how aim #1 in the above extract gave way more and more to aim #2. The artistically and historically important material appeared less, and product was created simply in order to fulfil the endless thirst for it. Soundboards are the obvious example - are they released now because of historical or artistic importance? No, very rarely. And, in the end, aim #3 never got achieved at all. Fans didn't stop buying bootlegs, and it doesn't appear that the Estate or RCA "vigorously prosecuted" as perhaps they should have done and promised to do. Like every part of the Elvis catalogue from 1956 to the present day, FTD is a series of great triumphs, bizarre failures, and an alarming amount of mediocrity. But I think the latter is as much to do with the move away from four releases a year as it is anything else. And I think that move has been responsible not only for the mediocre material that has been released to fulfil the bigger schedule AND the various errors that came with it.

But more on that as the thread moves ahead.

As for the first disc, I always thought it was a tentative start, bringing together stuff that many fans buying FTD already owned from bootlegs, albeit in lesser sound quality. It's solid enough, but as Ken intimated it could have been much better if it was more focussed on one particular thing rather than hopping around from rehearsals to live performances to studio recordings. It has, in many ways, a similar "structure" (or lack of) to the CD that accompanied The Way It Was book. But it is only understandable that a label such as this would have an uneven beginning, and it's even surprising how quickly it became more focused and provided the altogether more coherent and enjoyable discs numbered 2-5 in the list in the opening post. Now, of course, the first FTD is pretty much unessential with, I think, all (certainly almost all) of the material released elsewhere and within the correct context when it comes to the live material - I just lose track of which alternate takes are available where!

When I acquired my copy of Burbank 68, it was many years after it's first publication and long after I'd purchased two other titles dedicated to the 68 special.

Nevertheless, it's an amazing 80 minutes of music. I especially love hearing the dialogue as they discuss the structure of the special. When somebody (Steve Binder I presume) says "Elvis has to speak at some point" I remember laughing a little in retrospect of how nervous he seemed when he actually did speak.

Years later he'd have no issue whatsoever speaking from the stage.

I will enjoy following and contributing to this thread. Here's hoping it doesn't become a train wreck.

It's 800 miles from my house to Graceland, but I'm always up for making the trip!

It is amazing what FTD has released during its tenure. This label has been a Godsend. All those years that I collected the cassette tapes of audience recorded shows seem so far away. I had about 600 of those things and was glad to have them at the time. I started collecting them in about 1981. There's wasn't one of them that I didn't listen to at least once.
You will never hear me say that I am tired of, and bored with soundboard releases. I'll take them as long as FTD (or anyone else) chooses to release them.

There's not one FTD release that I regret adding to my collection, with the possible exception of that damned '70s Hits compilation.

I find it most interesting that since Sony acquired RCA, it has chosen to release content previously deemed only suitable for FTD -- I'm thinking of "Jungle Room Sessions/Way Down in the Jungle Room" especially -- as mainstream albums.

Right around the time This Is Elvis was released. Did you ever think that nearly 35 years later, the documentary's soundtrack would be released in expanded form by a collector's label?

Ken Jensen on Sun Oct 08, 2017 5:24 pm wrote:I’ve just played Burbank ’68, the very first FTD CD.

We're you able to acquire all of the early FTDs, Ken?
Absolutely. I have a complete collection.

Only one of them is worthwhile.
