Keith Alverson Interview - 'Strictly Elvis: 1973-74-75'
Hi Gang,
Over the weekend I interviewed photographer Keith Alverson about his background, times with Elvis and his exciting new book 'Strictly Elvis: 1973-74-75'.
It was a delight talking with him and finding out more about his stunning photographs and how he happened to get such great photos - his "Phoenix" jumpsuits have always been favourites of mine.
I was pretty damn excited about the book already but now I can't wait.
Sadly I cannot make ELVIS WEEK - but anyone from FECC going there can get a signed copy direct from Keith.
That would be very cool.
Go here to EIN for the interview & preview pages from the book.

Sadly I could not post the pages in high-quality as "fans" all too readily copy them and post them elsewhere, however some of the photos are in amazing quality.
Good to know they have all been digitally rescanned for the book from Keith's original negatives.
Cheers
Piers

Re: Keith Alverson Interview - 'Strictly Elvis: 1973-74-75'
I have a feeling I am not going to be able to resist this one !
You know, that version of "Dixie" and uh, the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," it's so beautiful!
The band he's put together is so over-the-top, and only Elvis would have that kinda spending power, and just audacious craziness. Choirs, and orchestras, and a great rhythm section, maybe another gospel group on the side. None of it makes sense until you suddenly hear something like that, and they're all playing a role in that, and it's very moving music. That's the pure joy of music in the man. You know, that's when I see everything stop.

Good to be forewarned that ALL his photos - good and bad will be in the book, but I sure the quality of the GREAT ones - wow they are stunning quality - will more than make up for any out-of-focus ones.
I am sure like with the previous TORONTO book some fans will complain of "fuzzy/ blurred" photos however these often help impart the real action of an Elvis performance.
I'm sure looking forward to this book - and especially as all the negatives have been digitally re-scanned.
Cheers

Piers - As always an excellent interview. Thank you so much for that. As far as the book, it looks as though the money I saved from not purchasing the Madison Square Garden book, will be spent on this one. Can't wait to relive the excitement of Elvis on stage in Keith's photos.

It's available now, and no way I'm going to pass on this one.
Keith Alverson shot some incredible pictures and the previews show that this is a quality release including many unreleased shots.
Well done Keith!

only question missing i would have asked Kieth is what he remembered from seeing the 2 Macon April 1972 shows?

i (thought) it was one of the very best interviews i have ever read! (and i'm not just saying that) i have investigated and got feedback that the original June 1972 tour AND Madison Square Garden project is overblown and way too much pages filled with press conference stuff(which most of have enough of anyhow!?) the CD of a show w already have available in a very similar sound means almost nothing + original project seems trimmed down to a remembrance trip for Pal ONLY for Madison Square Garden shows?
where as i always loved Kieths 1975 shots and especially all the ones he took on 31st May that year -outstanding!- so that's why i paid for his book today and left the Madison Square Garden book on the shelf

I'm glad the interview was appreciated by FECC members.
I had been considering interviewing Keith Alverson since 2015 so as soon as the book was announced I knew it was the right time.
Interesting that a few fans are passing on the MSG book to buy this one.
Originally I was told that the FTD book was going to feature the whole "On Tour" period - so maybe they have decided to split it it into two volumes with the next one actually focused "On Tour".
Hopefully the 'On Tour' volume will come with the box-set we have been waiting for.
I wish I was going to Elvis Week to pick up a signed copy and shake hands with Keith.
Cheers

Re: Keith Alverson Interview - 'Strictly Elvis: 1973-74-75'
Still waiting for my copy from Elvis Shop in Utrecht but I must congratulate you for an amazing interview, thanks Piers. I wish you could have been involved with this book and included this interview because it's so cool. I actually met Mr Alversson at the Danish Elvis conventions courtsey of Arjan Deelen and Henrik Knudsen about 20 years ago and it was great to ask him about photos and etc in person. BTW Piers, get together with Mr Lorentzen and publish a book with all your interviews so we can have them in print-form.

I try and help out Erik L when I can find any spare time - however full time "real work" limits my 'Elvis' time.
The recent Elvis Files magazine has my complete Tony Joe White interview in it from many years ago.
Originally it went into our Australian EIN fan club Newsletter so was slightly edited.
I recently came across the original cassette of the TJW interview and so gave the full version to Erik to use in the mag.
Cheers

Thanks for the positive report jessewade.
I am going to wait until I am back in the UK to get the MSG book as the postage to Australia adds another $100 to the cost.
