Ready Teddy
I´m not gonna post any Youtube videos or facts about this song. Just listen to it.
What a great song.
That guitar...the piano...and that voice. Just beautiful.

The studio recording is tame, the TV performance more exciting. Which one are you talking about?Scarre wrote:I´m not gonna post any Youtube videos or facts about this song. Just listen to it.

Tame? Not even close. Rock´n´Roll at it´s best.

Oh yes, I believe I first saw this on the Great Performances VHS but it didn't really strike me as anything special till I saw Elvis on Tour a few years later, the contrast of the 70's crooner to the Hillbilly Cat hit me like a ton of bricks.elvis-fan wrote:I will... his best 50's television performance IMO...

It's indeed a tame recording, given the original's very high bar. Even Elvis would have agreed.

Without a doubt, Richard Penniman was perhaps the biggest influence on Elvis in 1956.

Studio version for me...The sound might have a small part in it.TINML wrote:Oh yes, I believe I first saw this on the Great Performances VHS but it didn't really strike me as anything special till I saw Elvis on Tour a few years later, the contrast of the 70's crooner to the Hillbilly Cat hit me like a ton of bricks.elvis-fan wrote:I will... his best 50's television performance IMO...

Re: Ready Teddy
The studio version was his best Little Richard cover. The live Sullivan version ranks up there as one of his best live covers from 56. I wish he would have done Slippin & Slidin and Lucille at some point.

The Tupelo live recording from September 1956, despite the poor quality, is the finest performance we have by Presley.r&b wrote:The studio version was his best Little Richard cover. Studio version for me. That guitar that sounds like a train whistle...just beautiful.

Re: Ready Teddy
On the whole, I'm not terribly wild about Elvis's Little Richard covers. They're not bad, but they don't top the originals, imo. Ready Teddy is an exception; Elvis always made it something special, be it the studio version (a kick-ass highlight of the excellent second album) or the TV versions (I agree with elvis-fan that it's his best 50's TV performance).
I still don't know what Elvis (or Little Richard, for that matter) is singing during most of the verses, but it doesn't matter. The sheer force of the music is all that matters.

Re: Ready Teddy
Everybody is right. Elvis' studio version is very entertaining but Little Richard's is even better. That said, I'm a much bigger Elvis fan than Little Richard fan, so I enjoy Elvis more. IMO, the Sullivan show version is very exciting because we get to see Elvis but if we just compare audio, the studio version is better.
