"Indescribably Blue" (demo/master mix)

#1589520

Post by elvisalisellers »

An experimental isolated dub-down of the stereo backing track of "Indescribably Blue" [inverted to remove most of Elvis' June 12, 1966 vocal overdub] combined with the undated home demo vocal, which also utilized the June 10, 1966 Nashville "track" [take unknown], originally released on the 1999 RCA/BMG CD, The Home Recordings.

Some mic leakage from Elvis' studio vocal is still apparent [as indeed could be heard on the original master when Red West's guide vocals bled through in parts], but it makes for a fairly interesting comparison in vocal styles and phrasings between the pair; with the home recording perhaps being a little more pleading and regretful than on the more mannered studio take.
There's also a notable lyric variant on the demo where Elvis sings "I look at your picture" as opposed to "I talk to your picture" that he sang on the two studio takes.

The demo has been speed increased a tad to marry up with the master, plus some room ambience and e.q. manipulation has been applied to the rough sounding home - possibly hotel - demo.

From where did you get the pure instrumental track?

The instrumental tracks from this session were released on CD box Unsurpassed Masters.

It's not the pure instrumental track, but rather a removal of the center-panned studio vocals, whilst still retaining the stereo track.

Alternate mix with recessed backing track - more akin to the original home demo:

I have now listened to these tracks thanks to Juan Luis (Zippyshare immediately sets loud 'alarm bells' ringing on my PC).

It's so refreshing to hear this dry vocal. Listening to the original master is like wading through treacle. If the song was considered good enough for a single (equally If Every Day Was Like Christmas), then surely it was worth recording it properly ? This sort of lazy, unprofessional approach would not have been tolerated (by Elvis) 5 years earlier and before.

One other thing to note: On the home demo Elvis sings "There'd be no way to explain it" which he changes to the possibly less effective "There's no way to explain it" [the first time around] for the master [take 2]. On take 1, though, he repeats how he sang it on the demo, which may well give further credence to it indeed being cut [the demo] prior to his studio overdub.

Whatever the case, it is an exceptional vocal, hopefully now - in upgraded form - finally given its due.
