During the lost years when some consider Elvis a has-been, several soundtrack scores were given Oscar consideration for Best Music Adaptation/Treatment and Best Song:

Nice article. Thanks!
Frankie & Johnny, PHS... and I'll Be Back. Who could've thought?

So close, yet so far from paradise.

As the Variety article from 1-09-1967 states:
... Arthur Freed, prexy of the Academy ... emphasizes the pix involved are not nominees for awards, but are "preliminary selections" from which actual nominations will be made. Screenings start today ...
At the 39th Annual Academy Awards ceremony on 4-10-1967 (Mon), no Elvis:

Can't help falling love should have received a nomination for the 1962 Academy awards. I wonder if it was seriously considered and whether or not it came close to be nominated.

Maybe. But the 34th Academy Awards was all about "West Side Story," a huge, huge success:

The Best Original Song went to "Moon River" from "Breakfast at Tiffany's":

West Side story wasn't nominated in that category though.

Right. The point is that any other movie musical was far away from the mind of the Academy voters.

Nevertheless, the fact that our man's soundtrack work in this lost period was even considered for Oscar nominations is quite remarkable!

Shame they can't spell Gladys Music - maybe this put the academy off?

I like the first seconds of I'll Be Back when Elvis is showed with a double six guitar. Maybe if he "sings" with this guitar in the movie clip I could like this song after all.
