His Latest Flame

Post by Fabbe »

His Latest Flame is one of my favorite songs. Elvis sounds great to my ears and the song is well arranged (the acoustic guitar is excellent sound wise) and has a great rhythm. What you think about it?

Perfection. It was the first Elvis record I ever owned.

Nice soft rock song. I particularly like the Bo Diddly groove.

Always loved the song. Was blown away first time I heard the outtakes. Hank Garland's guitar tone. Wow!

Great song! I think the "His Latest Flame"/"Little sister" coupling is the 60's equivalent to "Hound dog"/"Don't Be Cruel" in the 50's. Perfect combinations and inspired performances.

I really liked this song it's one of my favorites. The song is kinda underrated by fans because it wasn't a million seller despite both sides of the single getting into the top 5. I loved all those early sixties singles that Elvis was recording I felt his live act would have benefitted by putting them into his show semi regularly. That way the song might be better known. Along with A Mess a blues, I feel so bad, Return to Sender and Devil in disguise.

Yes a masterpiece totally ignored in the 70's. Elvis didnt recognize his own great back catalog but instead chose to cover MOR and Vegas type songs and rush thru the few bona fide classics he did include or put them in a medley. Why this song was never done in concert when it is universally hailed by fans and non-fans alike is a travesty. If Elvis thought this song was teeny-bopper stuff or didnt care for it because it was an oldie , then I think he really lost his musical direction. Where was Sam Phillips when you needed him after 1969?

I'll never get over the fact that the greatest catalog in the world was for the most part ignored and I'll never be shy about saying Elvis' 70's concerts were nothing great to me, musically speaking. They were just an event, a happening, but musically, they did nothing for me overall .

Wonderful song. As others have said, it really is a true shame that Elvis didn't sing this live in his '70's concerts. He really did neglect his catalogue for some reason. I became a fan from his movie career and the many songs he performed in his movies.

Elvisly,

Linda

Course I love it. But I would also like to hear it with a new backing.

New drums new guitar new bass and Elvis vocal cleaned up sounding like it was recorded today.

But always want the original too.

Very few singles to come would surpass the total quality of this August 7, 1961 release, both numbers penned by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman.

Both did well on the charts, but maybe each should have been a separate A-side, to guarantee a couple of #1 hits.

"(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" made #4 on Billboard's "Hot 100" for 9-23-1961, #21 on the 9-23-1961 Cash Box "Top 100."

Love this song!!
It was one of the first songs that I heard that made me na Elvis fan.
I really like "strong" guitar parts and piano on this one. And outtakes are welcome addition to my collection! :smt020

I remember hearing it for the first time on this compilation - great memories!
