I listened to the B-side of the album back when it came out in a record store and it sounded different to my ears the few songs (one or two back then) that I already had on another LP's (Pieces of my Life from Today & Always on my Mind from some Camden compilation album from the early eighties probably).

I didn't buy the album back then in 1985 for some reason but a few years ago I re-read the little review of the LP with the 'futuristic' cover in It's Elvis Time (Dutch fanclub magazine) 169 from 1985 and I decided to go hunt the interwebs for it to see if it would still hold up for me many years after I switched to CD.

I quickly found a copy on the original see-thru/white vinyl and I bought it for the price of a normal lp. Nothing fancy. :P

Now, I obviously have all the songs that are on the 'Always On My Mind'-album. Either on CD or LP but I still immedeately heard the difference in sound. Like it was some sort of different mixing.

I love the warmth of that album!

I think almost all tracks of this album are alternate mixes. It's Midnight, You Gave a Mountain, are examples, fantastic sound.
Some Songs are remixed others have a mono mix and
Always On My Mind is the Version with the strings overdub. Unreleased till then. (But the back cover stated "all previously recorded" ....)

Listening to this LP and to be honest im kind of glad we have it as some shows are still unreleased to this day and we know from these recordings they exist on soundboard.. plus its just all good fun.

Totally agree
A n d parts sound really really great. I wished we would have some of the fragments as full concerts.
I really have fun listening to that LP. A great idea releasing such a funny record.

Love that part "you know what I cant do?"...them the piano Intro of Can't Stop loving you starts...than he tals again...
Is that whole Concert with that opening already out?

Today it is his Grammy Award Winning Masterpiece, " How Great Thou Art ". It is both uplifting and humbling at the same time. Majestic is the word that springs to mind and that voice is from a higher realm.

A classic...album.. now go go go go on the speedway
IMG_20200430_212418.jpg
IMG_20200430_212343.jpg
A movie and soundtrack i always enjoyed.. ''Speedway'' contained several upbeat songs in it's title Track ''Speedway'' it's short but sweet duet with Nancy on ''There Ain't Nothing Like A Song''.. some beautiful ballads ''Who Are You (Who Am I?)'' and ''Your Time Hasn't Come Yet Baby''.. Unlike other co-stars that duetted with Elvis, Nancy gets her own solo song on this album and it's advertised on the front cover even.. It's a groovy tune.. just like it's title ''Your Groovy Self''. The standout song of this movie has to be ''Let Yourself Go'' which Elvis re-did in a more rousing version for his '68 Comeback special.. when you listen to both side to side, you would think the '68 version was recorded in a different era, as Elvis totally attacks it there.

Back to ''Who Are You (Who Am I?) when i was younger and really upto this day, this must be my favourite song from the movie and soundtrack, it's a very pretty ballad, simplistic in it's melody and delivery, but lovely!.

Despite FTD having released this along with the few outtakes they had of these sessions [sadly it appears the tapes are missing] It's always fun to comeback to the original record!

That's The Way It Is - Legacy box set, disc 3

I'm reviewing all the shows to select tracks for a personal audio project. These shows are wonderful and the standard is high.

As much as I love the Live 1969 box set, I think the TTWII box has the edge due to the variations in the set lists between the shows.

I like this one... the mix is in some cases unique for this abum. (The Japanese cd i have, is mixed the same way)
"It's midnight" for instance has a clear bass-drum in the beginning, wich was always muffled on other releases...

A fine compilation with hits/non hits from the seventies.
I believe there where three versions, a black vinyl, a purple one, and this one.. clear vinyl...

This is really a very fine compilation.
When I first saw the CD in a record store I was very disappointed reading on the back that all tracks were released before. I thought to my self "why creating such a great funky front- and backcover but not one unreleased take on it? So the hope was that maybe the Always On My Mind Version on it c o u l d be the one with the strings added they have played so much on the radio at that time. So played it at the store and BINGO !!!! So I bought it.
At home I was sooooo surprised hearing all these other tracks were so many of them sounded very different.

My Boy
The version here is IMO the ultimate mix of that fantastic song. It sounds so different and it seems like a overdubbed version compared to the well known master. THIS version is-as far as I know - never released on another album.
As well the live songs on it are sounding better than the original master. Especially "You Gave Me Mountain" which sounds very fresh and the drums a lot better.

As well the flow of the album is great to listen to. All of it are "broken heart" songs, you are driving into a very sentimental/melancholy mood listening to it.
Surely m y most played Elvis compilation till know. Surely one you can say that RCA invested something in it:
A creative artwork (Love that modern pop art)
Great selection of songs to get a pretty fine flow and with the same "theme"
And creating mixing/remastering a really fine sound.

The only thing I do not understand is WHY RCA has not put a note on it that they created new mixes and that the title song is a unreleased overdubbed version.
I know that many fans did not buy it at release time because they thought it is the same old wine served in a new bottle...
