For me Promised Land and Too Much Monkey Business
are Elvis best covers of Berry songs. As already mentioned the 69 rendition by our man is too hectical...I prefer Chucks version. ..

Thanks to Ernst Joergensen, Roger Semon and Erik Rasmussen for the great work. Keep the spirit alive !

Well, we lost Chuck today at 90.

May he R.I.P.

Thanks Doc, as always. I saw Chuck perform about a dozen times include once in a small ice rink which held about 2,500 but only a few hundred showed up. I got to watch the show from the bottom of the stage risers and it was amazing and so different from the many arena concerts with 20000 in attendance. The live Bye Bye Johnny/Johnny B Goode on the London Session Lp stands in stark contrast to Arena Elvis. A crowd of 2000 make more noise and were more engaged than most of Elvis 70s appearances and illustrates the different paths they traveled. Also suggests just how great an Elvis world tour would have been.

Chuck"s music touched a chord with a baby boomed America and world. The simplicity and exuberance in his work reflected the state of the times-we all might benefit from times being a bit simpler today. It was clear Elvis loved his work and Elvis, Chuck and few other greats made possible the social changes of the 60s-an underappreciated accomplishment. Attached is from my personal collection. MSG circa 1973.

Thanks for the kind words and great stories. I saw Chuck in concert on New Year's Eve a long time ago. He was excellent.

Your photo is cool. Chuck played Madison Square Garden on 10-13-1972 (Fri), could this be the date of your concert photo? He was part of "Richard Nadar's Original 1950s Rock and Roll Revival" concert package. Nadar called it "Volume 10" of the series, and the bill included:

Chuck Berry
Bo Diddley
Coasters
Five Satins
Crystals
Gary "U.S." Bonds
Chubby Checker

What a line-up!
Doc i was at the show you identified. And i have shots from that show. However the pic i posted i believe is from a later Nader show. His early shows had a stage in the center with musicians in the pit. For security purposes in later shows the stage was moved to same side of the arena where it was for Elvis in 72 and the band was behind the artists. Those in the round shows were great and i have some great shots of shows.

I always loved the story when Elvis went to see Chuck Berry in LAS VEGAS at a 3.am show around '73 ,Elvis & Jerry Schilling I think. Elvis was in the front booth shouting out songs for Chuck to play , asking him to play 'Promised Land' etc ...great, great story.

I've been looking for some Chuck Berry VEGAS Marquee from around 1973 when he played Las Vegas but can't find any ...
Wrong timeframe. According to Jerry Schilling, he, Elvis, Priscilla, Sammy Davis, Jr. and wife Altovise, all snuck in to see Berry playing a "3 AM" show in Las Vegas. Given Jerry's description of Priscilla being there, this would most likely have been between 1969 and 1971. Elvis may also have seen Chuck in New York in early 1956, sans any of the above people.

RIP Chuck Berry. Just as with EP, if I was feeling down, I would put on a Chuck Berry album and the joyous sounds would immediately cheer me up. Rock and roll royalty.

It's a wonderful moment, three young white southern boys in late 1956, marveling at Chuck Berry's lyrical genius. Carl Perkins had just done some shows with him, and was recounting their backstage chats.

Interestingly, among the titles definitely cleared and ready to be taped at a 1967 session:

Brown-Eyed Handsome Man (Chuck Berry)

It would have been produced by Billy Strange. See more on this remarkable FECC topic:

That's gotta be just about the best rock concert/bio film ever made. Wow, who's left now from the beginnings of rock? Fats, Little Richard, Jerry Lee, Don Everly, that's about all. I really should have been born in the 40's or 50's. I just wasn't made for these times.
I have to admit that I have no interest in the music of today. There is very little talent that I see in Spears, Bieber, and the like. However, I must say that I like Adele and, surprisingly, Lady Gaga. Her costumes detract from a rather nice voice that she has. LOL

Elvisly,

Linda
There's a lot of good music out there today, Linda. Don't let just a few turn you off from it. :)

On topic, Rest in Peace to the masterful Chuck Berry. Music wouldn't be what it is without him. A true master.

As noted above, we know Elvis saw Chuck perform. One hopes they said hello afterwards, but nothing has been confirmed.

It's "funny", right...

It was actually PMP2 who first posted this news in the OT section. frus75 was the first to post it in the Elvis section. John? He simply copied it...

This is sad. Yet we can celebrate a really good life! Chuck Berry was an original, a one of a kind in his own way. His influence will continued to be felt by many generations to come. His legacy of music is such a gift.

Rest in Peace, Chuck, and thank you for the memories!

And to keep this Elvis related, maybe now we can have Johnny B. Goode reinserted in the opening of Elvis On Tour...
Wouldn't that be a good thing? Of course, I do not agree with your implication, though.

I have also heard a story of Elvis and Sammy Davis jumping up on stage during a Chuck Berry performance as a practical joke. U don't hear many people say a lot of nice things about him as a person. just a legend in music. I have heard plenty of negative stories of him as a person. Its too bad.

There is a clip on youtube of Chuck talking about Elvis. and he talks about Elvis and Sammy Davis being at one of his shows at the Hilton. and how Elvis and Sammy got up in the aisle and caused a commotion and they put the spotlight on them.
