Beyond the Reef - weird
I like this song, but Presley is barely audible on it, his divine voice swamped by others. Isn't that rather strange ? Or is it me

Re: Beyond the Reef - weird
Yes you're right, but it wasn't intended as a true recording, more of a session warm-up.
It makes it all the more sweet when the chorus stops and Elvis' voice is left alone. I love that part....

I think this is just the way Elvis wanted it to sound. He has always been an admirer of "group singing". One of his early ambitions was to be part of a gospel group. If I am not mistaken he sings this song together with Charlie Hodge and Red West. I must say the voices blend together nicely. But, of course, they practiced this one earlier in private sessions. Btw, it's nice to compare the different takes and mixes released (FTD "Guitar Man" and others).

Yeah, I've just been relistening to the Sings Guitar Man FTD this morning. Fantastic stuff.Bilbo Baggins wrote:I think this is just the way Elvis wanted it to sound. A lovely song but a sometimes-frustrating listen for reasons stated.
Elvis was rumoured to have recorded another Hawaii-related song, Now Is The Hour, at the PHS session in 1965. However, nothing has ever surfaced. Pearly Shells is beautiful in that film but unfortunately doesn't feature Elvis.
Yet another, Sweet Leilani, can be found only on a home-recorded duet. Again, a lovely song.

I agree, I really like this song. The song as a relaxing feel to it and Elvis' vocals are sublime.Scarre wrote:A lovely song indeed.

No. We have other examples, like "I Will Be Home Again". Or "(There'll Be) Peace In The Valley (For Me)", where the choruses are started by Gordon Stoker alone, the Elvis enters, and so on.King Volcano wrote:I like this song, but Presley is barely audible on it, his divine voice swamped by others. RCA UK never released 'It's Only Love' as a single until August 1980.
Backed by 'Beyond The Reef' it reached Number 3 in September of that year.
The extended version of It's Only Love was released on the cassette box version of the 'Elvis Aron Presley' set then released on the 12" Single. It was also the opening track on the UK LP 'The Sound Of Your Cry' (1982) which reached Number #31 on the album chart.

Re: Beyond the Reef - weird
I remember NME in the UK reviewing it as "Beyond Belief". I must say that its in my top 3 worst songs that Elvis ever did. Probably worse than Spanish Eyes IMO.

My favourite version of this track is on the Silver Box, though I like them all. There's something tremendously haunting - and moving - about the song.
