The song "Thinking About You"

Post by CountCanada »

Just finished listening to it on my headphones...Great guitar intro by James Burton. This is a forgotten gem to me. It is always on my play lists.

So anyone who doesn't like it is a threadcrapper? Always thought this was way beneath him and on a par with Mr. Songman. Mediocre song and a vocal that shows Elvis' once marvelous voice was much more ordinary now.

It's one of my favorite 70s songs. I wish he had done more like this.

Thanks CountCanada. This song is one of my favorite Elvis songs from the 70's. I too, love the guitar work, but I also enjoy Elvis' voice and his pacing on this one. He seems to be enjoying the song.

As I've written elsewhere, in listening closely to the spring 1973 top ten hit "Danny's Song," it clearly influenced "Thinking About You," which Elvis cut in December 1973 at Stax in Memphis.

Written by Voice member Tim Baty, his very first songwriting attempt, the Presley recording clearly pulls from the Anne Murray single, in arrangement and feel.

..

Anne Murray "Danny's Song" (Capitol 3481, December 9, 1972)
Billboard "Hot 100" #7, April 14, 1973, Cash Box #6, April 14, 1973
Performance from NBC-TV's "Midnight Special" - Friday, March 1, 1973

Presley must have loved "Danny's Song" as much as Baty did. He produced a version of it for Voice at his Palm Springs home in September 1973. Sherrill Nielsen sang lead. He also produced them at RCA Hollywood a few days after that. Elvis brought James Burton along as well for both sessions that month. The Voice recording of "Danny's Song," among others, remains unissued.

I've always liked that song. Slightly jazzy, but not too much. I wish he had done more material like this. I like the more contemporary sound Voice could have offered on songs such as this one.

You know, that version of "Dixie" and uh, the "Battle Hymn of the Republic," it's so beautiful!
The band he's put together is so over-the-top, and only Elvis would have that kinda spending power, and just audacious craziness. Choirs, and orchestras, and a great rhythm section, maybe another gospel group on the side. None of it makes sense until you suddenly hear something like that, and they're all playing a role in that, and it's very moving music. That's the pure joy of music in the man. You know, that's when I see everything stop.

This have always been one of my favourites from the Promised Land album. Always makes me think of summer and the delivery from Elvis is right on the money. This sits very easily along side songs like the Grass Wont Pay No Mind and You'll think of me. For some reason Elvis sounds younger on this track than the others from that era don't ask me why lol.....great song.

In the late 1980's at one of my local pubs they had a vinyl singles jukebox with about 10 Elvis 45rpms in. 'Thinking About You' used to be played a lot and always went down well.

I like it A LOT.

Musically and vocally, it is very enjoyable. Baty's lyric seems to have been written in fifth grade poetry class.

It's an OK track and all Elvis sings very well, when you lose a loved one, these kind a songs seem to resonate a bit more now.

I really like this one. There were many songs from the december 73 sessions that caught my ear as beeing something "New" from Elvis. Even the Today sessions in 75 brought out some good ones too. Bringing It Back is one of those rare, easy to the ears songs I really dig! :smt020

Though a few dislike the RPO albums I really liked the way they approached 'And The Grass...' on the 'If I Can Dream' album.

Although not his finest lead vocal, Elvis is not over-singing here, as in many other 1970s recordings. This is why he "sounds younger." Plus, he is channeling the easy sound of Anne Murray's hit single from a few months before, "Danny's Song."

Haha, no you're not. It would be a boring post and forum if everyone just priased everything.

Personally the song doesn't do anything for me. I don't hate it, i won't skip it, but nothing amazing for me and I like 'My Boy'. :P

Nope you are not. It is just a mediocre song, but at least it is an original and not among the covers and bombast of My Boy and such, so for that it stands out as a cut above. But its not anything special. For a singer like Elvis? He deserved better material from 'real' writers.
