Just rewatched a youtube video for this song. Man I love that song. One of his best, imo. That is all.

Not a fan of top ten lists, especially regarding Elvis songs, but off the top of my head it could be top ten from 1967 on. I really think it's that good.

Interesting, I don't rate it nearly the same. For me, from that soundtrack session the most remarkable song is "A Little Less Conversation."

In January 1969 'Edge Of Reality' (RCA 47-9670) reached #2 on the Australian Hit Parade (#1 in Melbourne)

It appeared on the 2 CD set, '50 Australian Top Ten Hits 1956-1977' in 2010 which reached #9 on the Australian album chart.

Always liked it, had a James Bond feel. For some reason, I love the movie. I can admit it's a horrible movie (the dog costume scene is just.... no words for it) . I have a soft spot for it though and love his character in it. My guilty pleasure movie for sure!

I have always loved this song, along with Wonderful World, ALLC and Almost In Love. His last few movies generally had superior songs compared to the few years immediately preceding them.

Good song, always liked it and for once an Elvis movie song really fit the times in the 60's. This one smacks of 1968 all over. I liked the songs from LALLAL more than any Elvis movie since VLV.

Kudos to producer Billy Strange, who brought a whole new perspective to the music Elvis was making. The songs cut for this film were an attempt to find something new for the singer.

Am I the only one who thinks Elvis, who overall looks very trim and handsome in this movie, looks a little chunky, especially his legs, in that dance sequence. The dancing does not remind me of Jailhouse Rock nor Bossa Nova Baby.

Good song and I get that they were trying to use it to show that he was having surreal dream but it wasn't the best showcase for it. A huge hit in Australia.

I think this is a horrible song and recording.

I hear it as an uninspired pastiche of faux-psychedelia with soul music overtones, a cringeworthy attempt to make Elvis sound in touch with those times.

Well, not surprising after all. Save for "(You're The) Devil In Disguise" and maybe a couple of others, the team of Giant / Baum / Kaye filled Elvis' discography with garbage.

The main side of that single, "If I Can Dream", was so much better.

Considering the quality of the preceding stuff, not a hard thing to accomplish.

Yes and it worked. Why didnt it continue? Why back to Jarvis? Wasnt the Wrecking Crew involved also?

I think simply because Jarvis worked for RCA and Billy Strange did not.

Very little Felton Jarvis in 1968, Elvis was headed in different directions. The next work was for NBC-TV in June, with Steve Binder. After that, Billy Strange got to handle another MGM soundtrack in October. But the singles released did not click with the public, and American Sound was right around the corner, with the production genius of Chips Moman. His four single A-sides totally clicked with the public and the critics.

Some of the Wrecking Crew regulars were involved in the March 1968 sessions, including Al Casey (guitar), Larry Knechtel (bass), Don Randi (piano) and Hal Blaine (drums).

You're not the only one.
Greystoke wrote:I think he looks great, but the suit/pyjamas aren't flattering for his build. The style and cut creates a rectangular appearance around his middle and the colour isn't exactly slimming. Whilst the framing and staging of this scene shows Elvis to be quite a large man next to Michele Carey. But there's some good costume design in the film.
Specially the dog costume:

Very little Elvis in the studio non-soundtrack for 1968. Apart from "Too Much Monkey Business" and "U.S. Male"...all soundtrack work. And of course, the TV special soundtrack that dedicated a bit of time to "contemporary" for the special... Felton Jarvis previously produced material, such as: Guitar Man" and "Big Boss Man", for the opening and road Medley"... :)

Elvis' stick (very skinny) legs could never ever get chunky. :) The sideways dancing reminds me of "Jailhouse Rock" in slow motion.

It would have been a very different story if the 1968 studio soundtrack work with Billy Strange, not to mention an August 1967 RCA Hollywood session set up by Strange that got cancelled at the 11th hour, had indeed made an impact at radio and retail.

Billy Strange was going to be the arranger. Not the producer.
