Re: Elvis 56-In the Beginning
Definitely my favourite Elvis Documentary of all time. Loved Levon's narration. I had always wished they had followed it up, but then again, its pretty hard to top what they accomplished here.

Re: Elvis 56-In the Beginning
Loved it when I first saw it. Very well written and presented. Love the bit where you see Como singing "Hot Diggity" then cuts into Elvis singing a raw lowdown dirty version of "Baby Let's Play House", priceless.Chucky99 wrote:Hello everybody..
I was watching the black and white Documentary Elvis 56-In The Beginning and as I watched I realised that it is very good and well done. The editing is done with good taste. I really loved The early Elvis performances of Baby let's play house ( contrasting with Perry Como singing Hot Diggity-man Elvis really was way ahead of his time) and Tutti Frutti.
I enjoyed the voice of the narrator Levon Helm ( in southern style) and especially the closing part where he ends with the following text, which is superb: "After 1956, his stardom becomes so unprecedented that it turns his world upside down.In 1957, his concerts are so big and unmanageable that Elvis stops touring. The original band of Scotty, Bill and DJ,Break up. Elvis moves to the privacy of Graceland and with his family. and right at the very peak of his success, his beloved mother passes away. He goes on to make a total of 33 films and becomes the highest paid star in Hollywood. He sells a billion records worldwide. Rarely has a single man so greatly affected the world through his music , but after 1956, we' d never be able to get that close to him again.....""
What do you guys think of the documentary, the editing, the narrator and the ending text?
Thanks, Chucky.
It was thinking about this documentary and the Como scene that gave me the inspiration for my topic "We all wanna change the world" - take a look you may enjoy it.

Thanks for the audio dub clip. It's not the entire close from Levon Helm, though, just the middle portion.
It's was very close, but not exact, in the OP. It'd be great to confirm the rest, I guess TCBell is not able to follow up on my request.

As for your comment above, the juxtaposition done in "Elvis '56" was indeed delicious, even if a bit of artistic license was taken.
What is true is that when Elvis sang a ramped-up version of "Baby Let's Play House" on the 2-04-1956 (Sat) broadcast of CBS-TV's "Stage Show," Perry Como's program was indeed airing on NBC-TV.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1955%E2%80%9356_United_States_network_television_schedule#Saturday
However, his inane pop single of "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)" (RCA 6427, February 9, 1956), was yet to be issued, and actually the B-side to "Juke Box Baby." After it got more play, it became the promoted side by RCA, and made #2 in the 4-21-1956 Billboard "Hot 100" chart.
The night Presley sang his classic Sun rockabilly single, Como gave America "Lullaby of Broadway" and "The Way You Look Tonight":

The performance we see in the 1987 documentary is from almost exactly two years later:
http://www.tv.com/shows/the-perry-como-show/february-8-1958-1149706/
..
Perry Como "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)" (NBC-TV's "Perry Como Show," February 8, 1958)
Does any of this matter? Of course not. The point is spot-on, changes were a-coming!

Re: Elvis 56-In the Beginning
This (along with the flawed but awesome "This is Elvis" and the '68 sitdown-focused "One Night With You" ---both staples of HBO in the '80s for a time) are among my desert island favorites of Elvis on film and video.
To this day, the original VHS and DVD are my "go-to " sources for newer fans. And I never tire of this beautiful production. Levon Helm's perfect narration and the Alfred Wertheimer photos and rare TV footage is such a triumph.
P.S. In recent years, along with the likes of Sinatra and company, I have come to appreciate the vocal artistry of crooner Perry Como ( his excellent CBS Christmas specials from Austria, Paris, the Holy Land and Williamsburg, Virginia were recently re-broadcast on SONY's GET-TV retro channel..as well as his '74 Yule special with Karen Carpenter and a 1965 Kraft Music Hall show from Boston with Lena Horne).
So this portion of "Elvis '56" comes to me now as something of a cheap shot, akin to showing Elvis doing "Wooden Heart" or "Yoga Is..." and cutting away to the Beatles or Stones for full contrast...
That said, it is very effective shorthand for the undeniable Elvis Rock'n'Roll Revolution...!

Nice work, Doc. Thanks. At least the idea for the two performances and how it was presented to show how different Presley was works well in the documentary.drjohncarpenter wrote:It is a very nice topic!Davelee wrote:Loved it when I first saw it. As for my topic, "We all wanna change the world...." I'm a bit disappointed about the lack of responses to it. I thought it was a good idea to talk about how important and revolutionary Presley was in the beginning, for the beginning is the most important of his whole career. It seems people are only interested in pages and pages of talking about mediocre work and the less inspired of his whole career - the 70s. Sad!

Re: Elvis 56-In the Beginning
Thanks. I had a feeling that the juxtaposition was more dramatic than literal. It does not diminish the point, though. As for your topic, the later years just seem to attract more vocal fans, for whatever reason. That said, you got at least 50 members to view the topic!Davelee wrote:Nice work, Doc. Thanks. Re: Elvis 56-In the Beginning
I disagree. Teenagers didn't "put down everything that came before" as much as they celebrated what was new, and claimed rock 'n' roll as their own. That the media was VERY against the new music only added gasoline to the fire. Every generation does exactly the same, no one wants to champion their parent's music, they want to do their own thing. And that's cool.Lonely Summer wrote:Rock and roll people liked to put down everything that came before - in their enthusiasm for what was new, the thought they had to put down what was perceived as old. My mom loves Perry Como, and I can appreciate his music more now that I am older. I give him credit, too, for being able to have hits during the rock era.
As for Perry Como, he enjoyed four top ten hits in 1956, including "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)" making it to #2 on Billboard's "Hot 100," but after that his decline in the "rock era" was as steep as anyone over the age of 25. He'd garner just four more top tens between 1957 and 1969, with "Round and Round" a chart-topper in 1957 and "Catch a Falling Star" doing the same in 1958.

This is not true! No ones putting down these performers, certainly not me anyway. But you have to agree that Presley and R'n'R was different and more exciting - do you agree with this?Lonely Summer wrote:Rock and roll people liked to put down everything that came before - in their enthusiasm for what was new, the thought they had to put down what was perceived as old. I'm not a big fan of Como and the like, I like the odd songs here and there, but I wouldn't put them down as performers, they were great in what they did.
But I think everyone on this board would agree that Elvis and R'n'R did change the concept of a generation of performers.

Re: Elvis 56-In the Beginning
When the "Elvis 56" video first came out on VHS in 1988, i must have watched it about a hundred times in the first month i had it, fantastic.
Came across this video (while Surfing Elvis), of the Documentary Filmmakers of "Elvis 56", interesting to hear their thoughts.
