Fabulous Final Three
I was just thinking about this today. Leaving aside everything else, we all know how the story ends, what a pretty fabulous final three singles the King produced.
Hurt - back, back, back to the 50's in no mean style - wow
Moody Blue - disco beat/pop sound/country tinge - really nothing else like it in his armoury - wow
Way Down - a real rocker, from the real rocker - the King still had it - wow

Re: Fabulous Final Three
If you want to cheat just a tad and call it the final four, you could add T-R-O-U-B-L-E. Still, the last few weren't too bad.

I like those three too. I remember hearing them on the radio back then.
Along with For The Heart and T-R-O-U-B-L-E.

This would certainly not make people think about the 50s, far from it.mike edwards66 wrote: Hurt - back, back, back to the 50's in no mean style - wow
Personally, I think the opening of the song is quite painfull - way over-the-top vocal performance and it sounds quite forced too.
As for the other two, Moody Blue and Way Down, they are much better songs and quite good but not exactly the "wow factor".

Re: Fabulous Final Three
Add Promised Land and the conclusion is that in terms of single releases these were some cool tracks in the 70's.
They deserved a bit more success. Especially Promised Land.

Re: Fabulous Final Three
Promised Land, For The Heart and T-R-O-U-B-L-E are in my opinion the "Fabulous Final Three".
Re: Fabulous Final Three
The singles got better from 1975 onward. but for me, held out false hope out for the forthcoming albums. The singles were the best things about the albums which were spotty at bestjurasic1968 wrote:Promised Land, For The Heart and T-R-O-U-B-L-E are in my opinion the "Fabulous Final Three".

I like T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Hurt, Moody Blue, and Way Down. Can't stand For The Heart.

Tend to agree here.jerrynodak wrote:I like T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Hurt, Moody Blue, and Way Down. Can't stand For The Heart.
Out of all the fabulous rock material that could have been available, this is not a great tune.
Fire down below would have pushed Elvis in a nice direction.
And there were some catchy tunes planned for the Nashville '77 session... really liked the demos.

Re: Fabulous Final Three
I have always enjoyed those three recordings. It would have been nice if Sony had remixed the Graceland session masters for the most recent release.
We've yet to have Hurt remixed properly (save for the 1985 release). Moody Blue does sound phenomenal on Second to None.

Hey! Wait a minute, I see what you're trying to do here. Do we have to have the Beatles on every topic!

Re: Fabulous Final Three
For The Heart, to me, is one of the top 5 Presley songs post 1972, and one of his better 70’s attempts at rock and roll. Written by Dennis Linde, it had a throwback feel to it and has JD and the boys sounding eerily similar to how the Jords sounded backing up Elvis in the 50’s . Without a doubt, the best song on an otherwise morbid collection of songs that made up the Blvd. LP, the song should have been an A side and perhaps Elvis could have had a later career hit with it. Imagine the Blvd LP without it? Wow what a depressing affair. The song definitely had merit as the Judd’s scored a pretty big country hit with it in the 80’sjerrynodak wrote:I like T-R-O-U-B-L-E, Hurt, Moody Blue, and Way Down. Can't stand For The Heart.

Re: Fabulous Final Three
Over the years some people on this forum have said that For the heart was actually the A-side but that Hurt was preferred by most of the disc jockeys in the U.S. at the time. Does anyone know if that is true?r&b wrote:the song should have been an A side and perhaps Elvis could have had a later career hit with it. Of course some people on this forum have also said that Mama liked the roses and It's midnight were the intended A-sides as well but that's BS.

Re: Fabulous Final Three
I like all three records with Moody blue being my favorite. I do agree with r&b though that For the Heart would have been the better A-side if it was actually the B-side.
I'm surprised Elvis didn't do Hurt in 1972 on stage when he was doing all those other big ballads.

I actually played the flip side to Hurt more. I somehow go for For The Heart before Hurt. But, that's me.....

Re: Fabulous Final Three
I also like For The Heart, but I just don't think Elvis sings it all that well. He does a much better job with Way Down.r&b wrote:For The Heart, to me, is one of the top 5 Presley songs post 1972, and one of his better 70’s attempts at rock and roll.
