Crying Time

Post by MikeFromHolland »

.

Never originally recorded by Elvis, but we know his 1970 TTWII rehearsal version from July 15, and live versions from August 21, 1970; September 4, 1970 MS and August 12, 1973 MS. So the song must have meant something you would say.

The original version from 1964, by Buck Owens (composer of the song):

..

We all know Ray's version. Here he is with Glen Campbell this time:

Eddy Arnold:

Elvis - July 15, 1970 fooling' around rehearsal:

Elvis Presley - Crying Time Live 21/08 & 04/09/70 MS, 12/08/73 MS (All live renditions composite)
As posted by Leon Smith
..

I would have liked it if he recorded it in the studio in 1970.

Thanks for that! I never payed much attention to Elvis' version until your post. I had only heard the mocking or playing around version which did not interest me.

I believe he was inspired by Dean Martins version. A very good song and a cool version by DM.

Although "Cryin' Time" first came out by Buck Owens in late 1964, Elvis better knew and appreciated the genius of Ray Charles' ABC-Paramount single, issued a year later. His version of "Crying Time" is a classic, a top ten hit on the pop and r&b charts, and won him TWO Grammy Awards in 1967.

..

Ray Charles "Crying Time" (ABC-Paramount 10739, November 13, 1965)
Billboard U.S. "Hot 100" #6 on February 20, 1966, R&B "Top Selling Rhythm and Blues Singles" #5 on February 27, 1966.

Charles' recording is clearly the one Presley echoes in the 1970 rehearsal and stage renditions that we know about.

When reading this, I was thinking that it couldn't have been Buck Owens' version that Elvis liked - I somehow knew it had to be Ray Charles. Good choice, IMO. I also wish he would have put it on an album in '70 (possibly, "Elvis Country"?)

"If the songs don't go over, we can do a medley of costumes!" - Elvis Presley (August 10, 1970 backstage in his dressing room before the first show of the August, 10, 1970/September 8, 1970 season in Vegas).

I'm glad it was not cut in the studio by Elvis. He could not have topped the award-winning hit version by Ray Charles, and I am sure he knew this.

It appears Dean's I Take A Lot Of Pride In What I Am (Reprise 6338) was issued around August 16, 1969, just as Elvis was halfway through his Las Vegas booking. Presley certainly loved Dino, although this Jimmy Bowen production is definitely not the one that inspired those 1970 rehearsal and stage one-offs.

Growing up in a house with Country Music,I heard the Buck version before anyone else's.I think in 1970 Elvis's voice was ripe to do any music he tackled.Country,Blues you name it.Too bad he didn't take advantage of that.Would love to have heard those raspy pipes do anything in the Country field.Crying Time would have been awesome.

That video clip is the second one seen in the OP ("We all know Ray's version. Here he is with Glen Campbell this time").

It's just a variation on the original, 1965 hit single by Ray Charles that I include in my first reply, and almost certainly the one Elvis favors in those 1970 covers.

Great tune. Elvis could have recorded a very nice close harmony version with Charlie, along the same lines as "I Will Be Home Again".

The inspiration to try out CT came from the DM release, 1969.
If he prefered the version by RC or DM is debatable.
The TTWII version seems to be inspired by RC, but then again the version from Aug. 1970 is DM all the way.
