Favorite Elvis 70's studio albums...

#1511758

Post by Mike in New Jersey »

Greetings,

I attempted a search on this topic and could not find one, so if this has been done before, please forgive me.

The It's Still Here thread by Juan Luis got me to thinking about my favorite Elvis Presley studio albums. So here goes...

1. Elvis Country (I suspect this would be an obvious one for most)
2. That's The Way It Is (It's mostly studio stuff so I'm counting it here)
3. Moody Blue (same context as TTWII... I can hear the groans from some of you already :) Despite all of it's flaws, I like this album quite a bit. it works for me.)
4. I hate to say it, but this is where things get murky for me. I greet the remainder of of his 70's studio albums with roughly the same amount of like/dislike/indifference these days. I find some of the Camden offerings of the time more enjoyable to listen to.

That's not to say that I don't like some individual songs off the remainder of his 70's catalogue, I can find a few off each that I like quite a bit. As complete albums however, I just don't get much out of them.

As I mentioned in that thread, I believe that the box set Walk A Mile In My Shoes, The Essential 70's Masters, provides, far and away, the best way to take in his 70's studio output IMO. When I'm in the mood for some 70's Elvis, it's my go to set. What do you folks think?

Mike

"He Touched Me" by a mile. The other contenders are too hotch-potch and the brilliant Elvis Country is compromised by the I Was Born crossfades.

I kinda like the I Was Born crossfades... funny personal personal anecdote about that. When my dad first bought that album, on 8 track, he only bought 8 tracks, he was convinced that the reason they did that crossfade between songs was so you didn't notice the bleed thru of the other tracks between songs. He used to complain mightly about that, saying that the 8 tracks were being produced more cheaply and of lower quality. Being only 5 at the time myself, I didn't know (and obviously neither did he) that he probably just needed to have the heads of his 8 track player realigned :-)

"Elvis Country" for me.

However, the '76 Boulevard album isn't as far down on my list as one might think.

Boulevard first, and He Touched Me plus the Xmas album in joint last place. Everything else shuffles around depending on what kind of a mood I'm in. If Xmas got banned and I never had cause to listen to that particular album again, I wouldn't shed a tear.

I'm pretty sure "On Stage" is not a studio album.

Elvis Country is the only one I have played consistently as an album over the years since its release. Then I just use the cds from the 70's boxset, skipping around quite a bit., EC was his last great album IMO.

1.) Elvis Country (by a country mile)
2.) That's The Way It Is/He Touched Me - Tie
3.) Promised Land/Today - Tie
4.) Good Times

Even though I rank He Touched Me highly I've got to be in the mood to listen to it. I listen to Promised Land and Today far more often.

That's the way it is.

Elvis country is also a stong album but the harmonica parts by Charlie Mccoy annoys the hell out of me. What a treat it was to hear some of the undubbed versions.

"Favourite" and "best" are two quite different things. Elvis Country is probably the strongest 70s studio album, but I like and listen to Today far more. I also very much like Promised Land - and TTWII and Moody Blue, although whether we class these as studio albums is questionable.

As I have suggested elsewhere, the 70s studio material is probably best judged on a song by song basis rather than as a ten or twelve-track listening experience, simply because of the way they are put together. Some work as an album, some don't. I have to say I thought the Elvis Now album got a new lease of life in the recent 60CD boxed set, and that the bonus tracks actually added to the experience for once. It's not a favourite album by any means, but better than I may have previously given it credit for.

I can't pick just one. I enjoy Today, TTWII, EC, HTM, Moody Blue...fact is...I like several songs from every studio album. Not everything, but more than not. I'm lucky that way.
