"IT'S A SIN"

Fri Jun 24, 2016 8:58 am

Written by country guitarist Zeb Turner and music publisher Fred Rose. Recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1946 for RCA, and a #1 country hit in 1947 for five weeks. According to Ernst Jorgensen, Elvis in 1954 saw Arnold perform the tune with The Jordaniares backing him. This was the same event Elvis talked to Gordon Stoker about wanting The Jordanaires in words to the effect of working with him in the future.
Eventually Elvis used The Jordanaires to back him with this song, but in my opinion, it stops there. Sounds to me closer to Ivory Joe Hunters version if it needs comparing to anyone at all. Welcome will be, if someone finds another version Elvis might have emulated closer. A beautiful tune recorded by Elvis swiftly in four takes, on March 12, 1961, in Nashville's RCA Studio B. Bill Porter behind the console with Steve Sholes at the helm. Included in the aptly titled "Something For Everybody" album released on June 17 of the same year.
This is Elvis Presley in 1961! Need I say more?

First off - its Ivory Joe Hunter not Turner.

Anyways, a nice song that i really enjoy and Elvis' voice is as sweet as strawberry cream.

Hey, Juan,do i get a "like" from you?

So you don't think his voice is "as sweet as strawbeery cream"?

I think that if it wasn't for Elvis singing it, I wouldn't have paid much attention to this song! In this case it's Elvis who does the difference! As he did on many occasions with songs he simply made "his own"! :smt020

Elvis at his vocally best. This kind of material and the way he treated it reminds me of My Happiness or Harbor lights. It's perfectly sung but I much prefer I Feel So Bad.

For those not having heard Eddy Arnold's hit version.

Doesn't Juan get one from you for posting his OP with interesting background info on the song and two worthwile clips? Would be the first time you would show some appreciation for juan's work.

When is your well thought out OP scheduled? Looking forward to it.

It's a relaxing song, Juan. One which Elvis sings perfectly. It sounds so far away from his speaking voice. It's amazing. Thanks for posting and the Eddy Arnold clip.

Are you aware you are using 3 times I and 3 times me/my in only one sentence?

It's a true sign of grandiosity.

Please stop taking unnecessary digs at my posts, you're causing more discomfort, not just me, but others looking in too. My comment was just a little fun - shame you missed the humour. stay on-topic then there won't be any arguements, if you can't keep your mouth shut and stay way. Thanks.

Why such a hostile response on a honest question? Were you aware yes/no? That's all.

It's related to your earlier Freudian slip. Hence my question.

Beautiful performance.

Unfortunately the line, "The dreams I built for us has tumbled", always jars with me.

Beautiful. Elvis phrasing is exquisite and his delicate delivery is a joy.

Vocally he is in total control.

Hank Garland on guitar finishes the song off in style.

Take 4 was the master released on 'Something For Everybody' in June 1961.

Your response to me about using the words, i, me or my is a clear indication that you think its all about me, and even using the word "grandiosity" and supplying a link to wikipedia to try and put me down. This is truely unnecessarly let alone wrong. Its people like you that cause such problems in these threads. And because of it you've now ruined a perfectly good topic,if you had've kept your mouth shut it would've been fine.

Noone is trying to put anyone down. I asked a simple question which you still haven't answered: are you aware yes/no?

Your response is another symptom mentioned in the link I provided:

Devaluation of people that threaten self-esteem

The topic isn't ruined at all. We can still discuss the music if you choose to. There's really no need to jump into the defensive mode if you think or belief your self-esteem is threatened. A simple yes I was aware or no I wasn't aware would have been sufficient.

His 1961 voice was like milk & honey. This is a great example of it. Perfect execution. The whole album is good, but could have been better with I Feel So Bad on it.

Actually, a song I skip on SFE. His voice is too high on this track and it bores me. Give me some Gently or Starting Today.

Re: "IT'S A SIN"

Fri Jun 24, 2016 4:14 pm

To my ears - Elvis at his best. Simple perfection as are several ballads from the SFE Album. Thanks for the Eddy Arnold upload but Elvis' version for me is the better one. I could listen to Elvis' voice from this period all day. I Met Her Today is another beauty for me from this era and it was a shame in some ways it was relegated to the shelves until Elvis for Everyone came out. Great stuff.

Magnificent vocal performance for a sweet light pop song - too sweet and pop for my taste

Unbelievable - absolutely unbelievable. DaveLee was simply trying to add a bit of humour and maybe offer an olive branch to Juan - smooth the waters a bit - and you have to come in once again giving lessons on English grammar coupled with a link on specific wording that you use to describe him. And then you ask why his response is hostile. I remember you did a similar thing on another thread. We are here just adding simple comments on an Elvis forum - we are not trying to win some kind literary award.

The title of the thread must be considered as quite relevant to how you attack others for derailing a thread when you do so yourself. Why oh why did you feel the need to add a comment on how people should write. I know Juan and I do not always agree on things, but Juan has my sympathy for spending time in adding the topic and must be tearing his hair out at the prospect of seeing it deteriorate into a slanging match because of a comment that simply was not needed.

I've already added my thoughts on how superb this song is, and I have added my thanks to Juan for uploading the Eddy Arnold track so I can safely withdraw from this thread too.
