BOSSA NOVA BABY

Post by Chucky99 »

This song from the Fun in Acapulco soundtrack is in my opinion the only good song from the album. I think it`s a very catchy song and I enjoy listening to it.
It is that kind of song that you either love/like or hate/dislike. I also believe it appeared in some recent/contemporary comercials.
What do you guys think about this song when you hear it on the radio or your CD player? Do you listen to it or you skip it?

Thanks,
Chucky

It's a great track. I can't imagine any fan 'hating' it.

It's a good single, always fun to hear, especially for something from a 1960s soundtrack session. Maybe the fact that Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller wrote it is a reason it's worthwhile. Of course, the original 1962 release has its own special charms, and the lyrics were not censored, as was done for the Presley recording. Jerry and Mike produced it as well.

..

Tippy and The Clovers "Bossa Nova, Baby" (Tiger 201, November 1962)
The B-side was "The Bossa Nova (My Heart Said)"

.
Dr. John Carpenter, M.D.
Stop, look and listen, baby <<--->> that's my philosophy!

Doc, did i miss something?

To me the lyrics were the same as the Elvis recording.

Good single. But this song was the last uptempo number of the "Old Elvis" which reached top 10 in US in 1963. Many years will go until the next one.

The line 'drink you fink' was altered for the Presley master - interestingly it was unaltered initially, so maybe someone at the session must have spotted it and decided it was 'inappropriate'.

I like the Tippie and the Clovers version too, it has a mellow latin vibe that chugs along nicely. The Presley version, in contrast, has a much more manic and exciting feel.

The only good song was "Love Me Tonight"...

BNB is a good song and a very cool song beat wise, and lyric wise for an Elvis travelogue soundtrack . It is by far the best song from FIA and probably the really last great uptempo song from an Elvis movie aside from some Viva Las Vegas tracks. At first I liked the recent remix, but now I dont. It sounds so phony with bits of Hard Headed Woman thrown in. I like the original and the alternate takes quite a bit.

The outtake from "platinum" is my own go to version. The drink-you-fink is still there and I just love the less polished approach. I haven't seen the movie since 1995 and i don't care at all about the album.

Superb review, Greystoke !

Fun In Acapulco is second only to Blue Hawaii as the classiest Elvis 1960s soundtrack album. Thank goodness we have this excellent showcase for Elvis singing in a Latin-American setting. Elvis is not all about rock 'n' roll and hit singles.

I've grown more appreciative of BNB over the years but it didn't really fit the musical climate of 1963 as a single.

Really? BNB was far better than One Broken Heart for Sale.

Hits the nail bang on the head for me.

I have always loved the 'Acapulco' soundtrack even more so than the movie. For the most part Elvis sings majestically and seems at ease within the Latin Pop genre.

I agree. In truth, OBHFS was an abysmal follow-up to Return To Sender.
