There was never a "Sun studio" in Memphis either back in the day. The studio at 706 Union was called the Memphis Recording Service from the time it opened in 1950 until it closed a decade later. The studio at 639 Madison was (and still is) the Sam Phillips Recording Service. 706 Union didn't get the name "Sun Studios" until it reopened in the late 1980s.

This point actually has nothing to do with the sub-discussion of the Nashville studio. And it is also incorrect. Whatever formality aside, once Sam Phillips began putting out hits on the Sun label, the location was almost universally referred to as Sun Studios or Sun Records in Memphis, both by musicians and the media. This can be seen noted in Billboard as early as their May 28, 1953 issue, where they talk about "... the answer to 'Hound Dog' comes from Sun Records, Memphis, Tenn., diskery, a wild thing called 'Bear Cat' sung by warbler Rufus Thomas, Jr."tarobe wrote:There was never a "Sun studio" in Memphis either back in the day. Yes. Sam may have opened the doors, initially, as the Memphis Recording Service but no one referred to it by that name, like you say, once he started releasing records on his Sun label people would naturally refer to it as "Sun Records" or "Sun Studio" even when Sam or his secretary assistent would correspond business matters by letter, the logo stamp on top of the paper would always read "Sun Records, Memphis TN".drjohncarpenter wrote:This point actually has nothing to do with the sub-discussion of the Nashville studio. It doesn't matter. Obviously the writer of the blog referred to the Nashville studio that Sam Phillips opened there, as the "Sun studio in Nashville". Not enough to be a "red flag" cause Sam Phillips and Sun are pretty much synonymous.
Back to the OP. Bill Black played on this recording. "Almost Elvis" quote by Craig Morrison, also had the key to the musician players (that included Bill Black), was the intent and reason for this thread... starting with the title.
