Elvis Presley & Dancing To The Stroll New Years Eve 1968
Elvis and The Diamonds:
Apparently Elvis joined in on The Stroll at a New Year’s Eve party in 1968 -- according to his friend Sandi Miller (SECRETS OF ELVIS’ JUKEBOX RC Magazine). Elvis and Priscilla slow danced, then she sat down, while Elvis, to her surprise, joined in on the Stroll.
The Stroll was a hit song and dance craze started by the Diamonds who were one of Elvis’ favourite groups. In addition he also covered their Little Darlin’ hit, covering it on the Moody Blue album and performing it mid-way throughout the 1970s concert years.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Diamonds
According to Sandi, Elvis was wearing an eye-catching black velvet suit when dancing to the aforementioned Diamonds hit.
Could this be the very suit?
Also of note: interestingly LED ZEPPELIN were heavily influenced by not only the blues -- but 1950s Rock & Roll — does their classic Rock 'n’ Roll from Led Zep IV namecheck the Stroll in the lyrics? —>
It's been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It's been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Let me get it back, baby, where I come from.
It's been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has.
It has to be said Elvis loved the Diamonds…Their vocalizing a joy to behold!

Nice post. The funny thing is that super-fan Donna Lewis, who attended with her mom and dad, does not note this song or Elvis' participation in it, at the 12-31-1968 New Year's Eve party. She details the location (Thunderbird Lounge), entertainment (Short Cuts, Teenie Hodges [legendary guitarist from the Willie Mitchell Band], Flash & the Board of Directors, Billy Lee Riley and B.J. Thomas), even when Elvis arrived ("at 11:20 PM") and what he was wearing ("a black velvet Edwardian suit with buttons and satin going down the front").a mess of polk salad wrote:Elvis and The Diamonds:

She noted that Priscilla and Elvis danced to "a couple" of songs, including "Georgia." Donna's folks thought Presley didn't seem to enjoy the party as much as in previous years, and at one point he disappeared for so long Vernon and Priscilla went looking for him. Still, his moment with "The Stroll" may have happened that night. Why would Sandi make it up?
I wouldn't say the Diamonds were "one of Elvis’ favourite groups," but he did appreciate their top ten hits in 1957, "Silhouettes," "Little Darlin'" and "The Stroll." The last was the group's only #1 single.
..
The Diamonds "The Stroll" (Mercury 71242, December 2, 1957)
Cash Box "Best Selling Singles" #1, February 8, 1958, Billboard "Most Played By Jockeys" #4, February 3, 1958
He loved doo wop, especially bass voices such as Bill Reed of the Diamonds. You can hear him singing JUST the bass line along to their Mercury single of "Little Darlin'" while visiting friend Eddie Fadal in Waco in May 1958. When he first added the song to his set in 1975, though, it was strictly for laughs, which was actually kind of how the Diamonds did that one, too. He'd give it about three dozen airings that year, and offer up about a dozen more in 1976-1977.
Also, the FTD cover shot you posted is from July 1969 in front of RCA Hollywood, he's wearing a brown leather jacket, not black velvet.
Here's another:
Thanks again for the fun post!

Re: Elvis Presley & Dancing To The Stroll New Years Eve 1968
Thanks for the fantastic reply doc. Larry Geller mentions the Diamonds were one of Elvis' favourites in the RC article, either way he was a fan. I'm not so sure about the black velvet suit or leather jacket as you mention, looking closely at the album cover it does looks different to your photo, more like black velvet but can't confirm it. As we know he had quite a varied assortment.drjohncarpenter wrote:Nice post. The picture Doc posted is the same leather jacket it's just the lighting in the photo. Also note the scarf is the exact same as in Docs photo and the alternate cover shot.

Elvis used the black velvet suit, which was a christmas gift from Priscilla, at New Years Eve 1969, not 1968.

Re: Elvis Presley & Dancing To The Stroll New Years Eve 1968
Not sure what you mean, but according to super-fan Donna Lewis, something different was worn in 1969. At the 12-31-1969 party held at TJ's, Donna recalls that Elvis was in a super mood and wore a "black bell-bottom suit and a red and blue Apache scarf." She does not mention "The Stroll," though. Maybe his mood this time around implies he danced to "The Stroll" at TJ's?egilj wrote:Elvis used the black velvet suit, which was a christmas gift from Priscilla, at New Years Eve 1969, not 1968.

Reading Sandi Miller's story might help us determine that. Given how Elvis' mood was far better at that party, and the clothing worn, it may well be from that evening in 1969.a mess of polk salad wrote:Looks like the black velvet suit. Could the 'Stroll' story be 1969?

There's only a sentence or two which I've re-written for my original post. She does mention 1968...however, time does play tricks on the mind. It's an interesting article not only for the Sandi Miller and Larry Geller comments - but for the great list of Elvis' record collection.drjohncarpenter wrote:Reading Sandi Miller's story might help us determine that.
