A soft heart for "Something", cause I heard and loved the song before I heard the original some years later.elvis-fan wrote:The weaker performances IMO are highlighted below:Fabbe wrote:A question for those enjoying the Aloha record (not only the video): what are the songs that you consider highlights of the record...

Wow, what a great memory for details Fantastic! Well, I can't really say anything other than my memory certainly isn't anywhere nearly as good as yours.LSP-4445 wrote:Sure you didnt watch them on video instead or maybe SVTRetrokid wrote:After Elvis passed away, the Norwegian TV Channel (yes there was only one TV channel in Norway back then) showed a lot of Elvis films and concerts in the following years. Every Christmas, they would send Aloha, the 68 special and In Concert and I would see them all...every time.
NRK didnt send these shows every christmas.....like Aloha aired new years eve 1979 and then in 1986.
In Concert was only aired once,in february 1980 (btw very late compared to many other european countries)
68 Special also aired in february 1980 and then around 1986.
My family got our first VCR in march 1985 and the first Elvis programme I recorded was the "One Night With You" that NRK aired during easter that year....good times
Then later that year I bought the "Aloha From Hawaii" VHS video (uk import) and it was expensive but worth every penny
.
.
.
I guess I didn't see them "all" every year.
Anyway, we didn't have SVT but my grandparents did and I spent almost every weekend at their place from age 6 until 12-13, so I guess I caught some of the shows there as well.
I do however have one distinct memory of seeing the Aloha show at home so that must have been 1979. I also remember seeing the Aloha at Ula in Sandefjord when I was 15, so that must have been 1986. But that was sometime during the summer.
As for In Concert, I'm sure I saw it on several occasions so I guess I must have seen that on SVT as well. The 68 show might just have been those two times. I'm not sure.
What I do remember very well, was seeing TTWII on SVT when I was around 10-12. That was by far the best experience I ever had regarding televised shows.
Finally, I never saw any of the shows on VCR since we didn't have one, so they must all have been from the regular TV schedule
Anyway, thanks for that great piece of information!

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
I Can't Stop Loving You is so much below the standard of MSG, from only six months earlier, that I'll never listen to it on record. I'll watch it if I'm playing the DVD. I skip quite a bit even watching it too.
Regarding the original 2 LP set, I always thought side 4, along with one track from side 3, What Now My Love, were the "meat and potatoes" of this performance. It took quite a while for him to wake up and kick it into gear this night.

I would of opened the show up with that's all right mama being the first hit song which made him big.
See see rider is a sh*t song I would imagine Elvis kept this song as the opener as it was easy to sing and didn't kill his vocals before the gig had started

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
Truth be told, the song is a great 1957 r&b hit by Chuck Willis, and a fine choice for Elvis to sing.a mess of polk salad wrote:SEE SEE RIDER'S S*** Hot!OnTourCam wrote:I would of opened the show up with that's all right mama being the first hit song which made him big.

However, the January 1973 "Aloha" performance of "C.C. Rider" is tepid. Seek out the February 1970 rendition from Las Vegas, it is "sh'it hot."

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
I was watching the show today -- I think the director did a fine job creating intimacy between Elvis and the viewer. IMHO the angles are better on Aloha then TTWII or EOT.

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
The angles maybe are better, but Elvis' energy and the quality of his performance are far better in TTWII comparing to Aloha.
Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
CC Rider is a great R&B classic, mostly known by Chuck Willis and Laverne Baker. I think its fine in the context of an Elvis show, but I agree with you, that a performer should open a show with one of his best known songs. Thats All Right worked best and should have stayed the opener just as CHFIL stayed the closer. If not that one, Elvis had plenty other to choose from. Blue Suede Shoes was great in 69 as well.OnTourCam wrote:I would of opened the show up with that's all right mama being the first hit song which made him big.

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
Yes, but not in 1973. Elvis decided to do short versions of his greatest hits, so he is to blame for this, sorry to admit.
Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
Me too, I was just getting into Elvis around 1973 and hadn't even heard of The Beatles!r&b wrote:Juan Luis wrote:A soft heart for "Something", cause I heard and loved the song before I heard the original some years later.elvis-fan wrote:The weaker performances IMO are highlighted below:Fabbe wrote:A question for those enjoying the Aloha record (not only the video): what are the songs that you consider highlights of the record...

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
No Beatles in 1974 when I first became a fan at 10 years of age. Only knew "A Hard Day's Night" single which I found in my mom's collection. I first heard the blue and red compilations around 1980.r&b wrote:Juan Luis wrote:A soft heart for "Something", cause I heard and loved the song before I heard the original some years later.elvis-fan wrote:The weaker performances IMO are highlighted below:Fabbe wrote:A question for those enjoying the Aloha record (not only the video): what are the songs that you consider highlights of the record...

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
Steve I agree with you about the differences between the two renditions, but, relative to the Aloha show as a whole I still think ICSLY is one of the highlights. That said, the Aloha ICSLY is a good example of how the intensity level and general enthusiasm of Elvis' vocal performances dropped after 1972. Truth be told, it was diminishing returns each year after 1970. The enthusiasm resurfaced in '74, but the intensity never really did.stevelecher wrote:I Can't Stop Loving You is so much below the standard of MSG, from only six months earlier, that I'll never listen to it on record. The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
Just got a sealed ALOHA FROM HAWAII LP (Indianapolis pressing -1974 ) that's mint - the vinyl plays beautifully . You know I'm impressed with the Quadraphonic aspects, it sounds really good with horns etc jumping out in the mix / just playing it on REGA turntable & amp speaker, nothing high end but still impressive for age. We need a blu-Ray with this mix (Quadraphonic !) ...blasted it out tonight. The ALOHA EXTRAVAGANZA continues. Please what do other members think of the original Quad LP? It sounds quite dynamic ....

Re: The 'Aloha From Hawaii' Extravaganza.
IT was on eBay for about £40.00 ...of course Quadraphonic was the big thing in vinyl around that time but it didn't take off quite like people hoped. The vinyl records are mint as mentioned, really pleased with this purchase.elvis-fan wrote:Whoa! If you check eBay you may be able to hunt another one down. It said original from '73 but the label colour and style indicates the Indianapolis pressing from '74 ...I'll settle for that! Gonna spin him again tonight ...
Cheers

SEE SEE RIDER is a great R&B/Rocker but only if you listen to:
- Lavern in her 1962 cover
- Elvis live in February 1970

I'd toss in the Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels version as well. That said, the particular performance on On Stage is by far the best, imo.jeanno wrote:SEE SEE RIDER is a great R&B/Rocker but only if you listen to:
