What 'new' songs since 1977

Wed Jul 09, 2014 4:40 pm

When Elvis died, we heard there was stuff in the vaults (perhaps from Joan Deary?) that would keep his memory alive for years to come. Now , we certainly have had numerous releases over the years, re-releases, great box sets, etc, but in reality most of these have been concerts, outtakes, and rehearsals. For those of us around in 1977, we took that quote to mean unreleased 'new' songs. But since then the only ones I can think of are the Sun demos (really not legit studio recordings), Beyond The Reef, Danny, You're the Boss, I'm A Roustabout, Plantation Rock, and (egads) Dominic. Not exacly a wealth of material. Am I missing any others? Remember I am talking about any 'new' studio recordings. Guess I mistook that quote!

"Tiger Man"
"A Hundred Years From Now"
"For The Good Times"
"My Way"
"I Can't Stop Loving You"

Those are the ones that spring to mind.

Wasn't ''Softly as I leave you'' released after he died?

I'm a Roustabout is probably my favorite song that was released after he passed.

That song could have been a hit in 1964 and should have been included on the soundtrack to the film.

I must add Fool, Fool Fool. A good one. Also I guess we could count This Time. A studio cut even though he was folling around and it was part of a medley. Thanks for the other comments.

Yeah . The way it was stated (I dont remember the exact quote or who said it) gave me and my 2 collector friends the impression there were many unreleased songs. I took that to mean new recordings, not outtakes and concerts. Stupid me I guess.

Little Mama was live no? Like Tweedle Dee.

The Lady Loves Me has been known since 1964.

"I Can't Stop Loving You" and "A Cane and a High Starched Collar" were mentioned, but they were released during Elvis' lifetime, in 1969 and 1976 respectively. Also "Tiger Man", "For The Good Times" and "My Way" were listed but these were only new versions, we had already had the original live versions on vinyl pre-1977. I remember a long list of songs being compiled around that time in "Elvis Monthly" but most have now been discounted and some were even songs that had been sung by Elvis' co-stars in his films.

I think Twelfth of Never was a rehearsal, not a studio recording. Its Different Now, I forgot about but it should have stayed under wraps forever. Simply awful IMO. Dominic was better and certainly more fun to listen to.

Joan Deary or whoever made that statement was talking about unreleased material that was either live or studio.

They were obviously exaggerating because RCA released so much Elvis material when he was living.

Yes thats why I wrote "not proper studio but still new songs" and "only in movie" regarding the duet.(released officially on record in 83)
Still worth mentioning iMO

Tony C wrote:"I Can't Stop Loving You" and "A Cane and a High Starched Collar" were mentioned, but they were released during Elvis' lifetime.

He was probably thinking of the This time/I cant stop loving you....the informal 1969 studio recording.

I wouldn't say they were exaggerating, more being conservative with the truth. Although very few 'new' songs have been released since 1977, there has been a considerable wealth of unreleased 'performances'. Joan Deary brought us the Gold and Silver box sets with loads of officially unreleased performances, which in some respects were almost the forerunners to the FTD releases we now enjoy...

There was no exaggeration.

Even if we only take into account professionally recorded material, there were the new songs mentioned above, plus all the live recordings from August 1969, February 1970, August 1970, February 1972 and April 1972. Then there was the afternoon show from MSG, the rehearsal show of Aloha (plus the after-show songs), and unissued tracks from the Memphis 74 concert and EIC. There was also the material from the 68 comeback, plus Deary had already started mining alternate takes prior to Elvis's death, and so was no doubt taking that into account as well. And this was all known about at the time of Elvis's death, of course.

The Twelfth of Never was recorded in August 1974 at the Vegas rehearsals but it wasn't sang live, as far as I know.
