No more Candle light Vigils after this year?

Sat Jul 05, 2014 8:44 am

I am seeing rumors on Facebook , from various Elvis fans, that EPE aren't wanting to keep the candlelight vigils going and that this is the last year. I know there has been talk about the airplanes but didn't know anything about this...

WTF. Are they TRYING to just completely trash everything?

Why aren't they getting rid of the f***ing Mr. Potato Heads and Elvis XXX porn videos and crap that is worthless?

I think it's unlikely they could stop it. Fans would still turn up.

Guys, they're not going to kill off part of the business model that generates revenue and free global publicity.
They're going to screw the owners of the planes for a better (for EPE) deal and charge you more for the candles.

What, you can't even take your own candles?

Come on folks, it's been 37 years, time to finally let go. Stay at home and watch repeats of Storage Wars or Here Comes Honey Boo Boo on TV, maybe see if you can spot one of your relatives.

Storage Wars is more fake than the fight scenes in Elvis films.

I actually understand what The Pirate is saying and I agree.

After so many years would stopping the Candle light visual be so bad.

I understand Elvis meant a lot to a lot of people and still does but it's been 37 years.

It seems silly to some that there are people mourning a man like this that they never actually met.

It doesn't mean that the Pirate or anyone else that agrees with him is not a fan of Elvis.

It seems kinda funny to hold a candlelight vigil for a house anyway. I know someone used to live there that was somewhat famous but can't remember who right now. :facep:  :smt006

I agree.

Elvis fans of all ages from all over the world gather in Memphis, for Elvis Week. It will be a mistake stopping the Candlelight Vigils and don't see anything wrong with fans wanting it.

Before we all get carried away, has there been any OFFICIAL announcement about this?

Or maybe its just a rumour.

The Vigil is grossly misrepresented here.

Some probably do take it a bit far, but it's not about the house.. come on.

Elvis Week would not exist without the Vigil. It's what Elvis Week grew from. Fans gathered once a year to pay respects, and each year it got bigger. The fan club that started it still picks the "song of the year" and the poem (,etc), as a matter of fact.

Here's the way I see it (and it's the same for most who are sane about these things):

A lot of us have had a lot of fun listening to Elvis music. We've met friends, loved ones and more because of Elvis. Elvis Week has become (in it's best moments) a very fun celebration of the man's life. But it is on the week of his death. So taking a part of one or two hours one night to quietly respect the man for that isn't the twisted idiocy some here paint it as. Take away the preconceived notions and misrepresentations, and it's actually very touching and very cool. One of the most genuine aspects of Elvis Week that (thankfully) focuses on Elvis himself.

On another note... there is no way in hell EPE would try to kill this. Fans would riot on a level which they've never experienced. And they know that.

It's not happening.

Elvis week and the candlelight vigil has always made Elvis' estate a lot of money and that's what it's all about.

They will keep it going for a few more years until a significant drop in attendance no longer makes it hugely profitable for them.

Strange reactions from Mysterytrainrideson and Promiseland. Not surprised though as they seem hell-bent to agonize Elvis fans.
What the hell they are wasting their time here is a more burning question.
If the vigil is not your cup of tea so be it, but why be happy about it ending?
Can't you stand if people still remember Elvis?

Again not liking the candle light vigil and saying so doesn't mean you aren't a fan.

Hell there are people that go to Elvis week every year that can't name ten songs of his.

There are a lot of Elvis fans that don't really like the candle light vigil and they have said so over the years.

Exactly, Brian. That's the saddest thing about these so-called fans at the vigil's, they know jacksh*t about the music and i thought that's what being an Elvis fan is all about - the music. And not only that, it's all very embarrassing, standing with a load of people who know nothing.

Be that as it may, seeing thousands of people still remembering Elvis in Memphis each and every year can't be a bad thing for the Elvis world now can it?
Name one other singer that still draws these kind of crowds remembering him or her.

Really? Because I've gone every year I go to Elvis Week and I can damn sure tell you differently. The vast majority of fans who go to Elvis Week may not be the massive geeks that we are, but they're not ignorant. They approach fandom differently, but that's not the same thing.

Not liking it is fine if it's not your thing, and some fans do know more than others (as I said), but idle judgement comes from those who "know nothing".

As the Vigil has gone on, there also has, from time to time, been a small number of those who are curious (in the not-so-positive way). Don't confuse them for fans - they don't generally stick around, as we don't feed "trolls". lol

This is the silliest rumor yet. I read that Graceland and its associated shops earn half their annual earnings during Elvis Week. There is no way they are going to shut down the candle light, which draws more people to Graceland than any other event of the year.
