Thank you. "Suspicion" was a mystery to me for a long time because they played Stafford's version on the "oldies" station all the time. Without looking it up, I first assumed he pulled a Mickey Alba! But no. Elvis missed his chance.

When I first heard about the whole Johnny Rivers controversy, no name or song was mentioned, so I had thought it was "Suspicion" by Stafford. Later on, I realized it couldn't have been him.

I still couldn't fathom why Elvis didn't get a hit on this first.

Thanks again.

Very nice post, Mike. Thanks! I've never really been too over-the-moon with the song "Suspicion" but i've always had a soft spot for VLV film and EP, besides the title track, i like Red Wests "If You Think I Don't Need You".

This misspelling on an Asian release just hit me as surprising and amusing.

The sleeves were posted by Bob Holland just a few posts above mine. They didn't transfer when hitting the quote button. Can we move on? By the way, I've been on record through the years on these pages that Suspicion is one of my all time favorite EP performances. It is perfection, from Elvis and his band. Wonderful!

Lovely post about a wonderful song. The guitar arpeggio played by Harold Bradley, along with Bob Moore's flowing bass line, is so darned cool, and of course Elvis' vocal is note-perfect.

According to Ernst Jørgensen, it was Elvis himself who ultimately rejected the idea of using "Suspicion" as a single A-side. Make of that what you will.

All the takes are fun to hear, and found in best-ever quality on this release:

Despite it was against policy to issue singles on regular LPs at the time (excluding soundtrack LPs) I think had they released Suspicion backed with Such An Easy Questions a month before the Pot Luck LP, the single would have sold a million and it would have significantly boosted the sales of Pot Luck as well.

As an Elvis fan I LIKE the policy, because I thought ideally, all songs should eventually end up on LPs, but only once! And the singles should be collected for the Gold Record series. I did not like the fact that Loving You and Teddy Bear, and Love Me were each on two albums, the second time in each case was appearing on Elvis Golden Records. But, from a sales point of view, hit singles typically boost album sales. So, all of Elvis' studio album prior to From Elvis In Memphis would have benefited from having at least ONE hit single on each of them.

I think Loving You, Teddy Bear and Love Me should have been replaced with My Baby Left Me, Playing For Keeps and I Was The One on Golden Records.

I'm glad they issued the hits on Golden Records and not filler material. That truly was an album of golden records.

Can you please post or quote where the info comes about Elvis decision no to release Suspicion as a single?. I can´t find it on the sessions pages 166-169 on the book Elvis Presley-A Life In Music by Ernst Jorgensen. This way we will have it on here posted. Thanks. Bye for now :smt006.

You should know by now I don't make baseless claims. ;-)

You didn't look hard enough: Ernst notes Elvis' decision on page 172 of his wonderful session book:

980701_A Life In Music p172.JPG
The material for Pot Luck had already been selected and included ... two songs initially considered for single release -- "(Such An) Easy Question" and "Suspicion" -- Afterward, Elvis determined that "She's Not You" and Freddy's favorite, "Just Tell her Jim Said Hello," should be coupled as the next single ... when the record stopped at a disappointing number five, it seemed as if Elvis's ability to pick a hit has failed him, too.

I disagree with John Lennon, I love Devil In Disguise. It's obvious The Beatles really thought he died in 58. But to each his own!

Their comments reproduced here seems to confirm it. Then help me a bit here please. Is there any Beatles quote about a song recorded between 1960 and 1976 that they dig? Or about any album? I can understand and even share a not so kind word to Kissin' Cousins, Girl Happy, etc. But about Devil In Disguise? I didn't expect it...

So I want to know what they thought about It Hurts Me, Guitar Man, Loving Arms, TTWII movie, Way Down, etc etc.

I believe it was said for that jukebox jury program. I doubt he had any reason to pick it apart under ordinary circumstances. He just wanted music that had a lot more of an edge.

I like the song, too, but it doesn't exactly kick butt, either. It's good. I guess many first-generation fans at the time wanted "great," not good. They wanted rough, raw sounds. This is not limited to to Lennon by any means.

People think that Elvis' last year before he took a sabbatical, was great. I speak of 1963. To me, I hear Elvis slipping into a funk. It would take years for him to emerge.

He understood it. In a 1965 interview, he eloquently explained "I withdraw not from my fans, but from myself."

I wish he had more opportunity to speak with other artists about this.
