This is quite a lengthy article, with some interesting quotes from the Colonel among others.

Thanks for that. The Colonel and the almighty dollar. Elvis' career hadn't a hope.

I agree.George Smith wrote:Fascinating but sad. Thank you for posting.poormadpeter wrote:This is quite a lengthy article, with some interesting quotes from the Colonel among others.
What a horribly cynical, cold, and excuse-laden interview with Tom Parker. It's interesting to note that all the issues of complaint regarding Presley's career path were very clear to management at this point. But, sadly, his reply is that it's all about the money, and nothing, be it Oscars or good scripts, matters.
The template for the next 13 and a half years of his mismanagement is all there. Oh, it hurts to read, even now.
And note that Variety issue date: Wednesday, January 15, 1964.
In three weeks the game would completely change, and Parker would either not notice, or care.

It was almost exactly ten years since Elvis had first sung for Sam Phillips.drjohncarpenter wrote:And note that Variety issue date: Wednesday, January 15, 1964.

Within weeks of this article, Elvis would find solace in Larry Geller and effectively abandon his career for over two years.

Thank you for posting this revealing article. The key term for me can be found in the first paragraph, "easily the most robust corpse extant". Sad indeed.

Re: 1964 Variety Article on Elvis Movies.
The truth is hard! And it is true: We went to the cinema to see Elvis, most of all. "Put some songs and a storyline in there..." We really didn't care much about it back in the day as long as we could watch Elvis get the girl and bust the bad guy. Jerry Reed put out a song called Raised On Rock'n Roll were he describes those innocent early sixties watching Elvis and Ann (Margret) on the big screen. 1964 as we all know was the turning point for our guy.
Sad reading indeed!
