Revelator wrote:Elvis's version of "Stand By Me" is a masterpiece, one of his finest performances. It is one of the last recordings to exhibit the sensitivity and gentleness of his early 60s recordings, when he practically caresses the lyrics. While a live version would have been interesting, the song would have likely suffered in an arena and might have been slathered with excess orchestration and vocals. But it would have been perfect for a small venue, like those of the '68 sit-down shows. Having Elvis perform in small, intimate venues might have prevented or slowed his boredom with performing in the '70s.
You're more than correct. So much of Presley's catalogue offers itself to a smaller venue. Could you imagine this being a part of a show ALA Roy Orbison Black and White Night? Part piano part guitar? Small venue, small band. What would I know about forward thinking Management?
