Hmm. "Hey Jude" was the #1 song of 1968, a recording beloved today as one of the greatest Beatles singles, and Elvis sings his studio rehearsals of it with a great deal of warmth and affection. He didn't like this song, he LOVED this song.

But, we can all agree, it's no "My Boy."

Well I think HEY JUDE is a HORRIBLE song, regardless of its no. 1 position and it being a Beatles song. It is boring, overly long and one I quickly turn off by ANYONE. Elvis' version is terrible -- probably the worst performance from his Memphis recordings in 1969. If he LOVED this song, he would have shown his interest by getting the lyrics, and doing it as "properly" as one could to this "piece of music". This is one of those songs I wish we never had -- and unfortunately, there are quite a few.

I don't agree with your about the song itself, but I do agree about Elvis's version. He not only doesn't know the lyrics, he also seemingly doesn't know the tune either - either that or he sings notes out of tune, it depends which way you want to look at it. We should never view it as a rehearsal because it was released as a regular master, and as such it is awful.

The historical record is clear that Elvis' recording of "Hey Jude" is a rehearsal, never intended for release. Producer Chips Moman allowed him this indulgence, but it was never seriously considered by the producer.

That said, the warmth of his wonderful vocal can only be denied by those whose hearts are lumps of coal.

Had it been released as a rehearsal years later on perhaps the 70's boxset or the various American recordings CD's we've had I think it would be better thought of-Elvis having fun with a Beatles track for his own pleasure.Instead it was put out on a poor album as a "proper" track.

Not in album-sequenced order, but in terms of "top ten":

1.Long Black Limousine

2. I'll Hold You In My Heart ('Till I Can Hold You In My Arms)

3. Any Day Now

4. Suspicious Minds

5. Stranger In My Own Home Town

6. Only The Strong Survive

7. Gentle On My Mind

8. True Love Travels On A Gravel Road

9. In The Ghetto

10. It Keeps Right On A-Hurtin'

Truly an excruciating exercise! I had to cut genius!
