I think Elvis liked also Jimmy Carter but in June 1977 the rambling and incoherent conversation of Elvis with the president regarding George Klein wasn't pleasant for Carter, the only president who saw Elvis on stage (in Atlanta, Georgia, June 29 1973, when he was governor of the state).

You're welcome, jurasic1968.

Another article from the same day, published by the "St. Petersburg Times".

This one was signed by Archie Dunlap, who was known as the "Dean of Florida Newsmen". He was a very well-respected personality, and was 80 years old at the time of writing this article. He passed away in 1968, aged 92.

Despite being old enough to be Elvis' grandfather, and having been born in another century, Mr. Dunlap showed more kindness towards the new sound than some of his younger anti-rock and roll colleagues. And while he distanced himself from the phenomenon, he showed no disrespect for it.

But you gotta dig the final paragraph of his article :

The present craze for Presley is not of long duration. He played an engagement in Sarasota a year ago and while he drew good crowds, there was no excitement such as prevailed this year at his Florida engagements

And except, of course, for the first sentence, he wasn't very, very wrong.

In fact, Elvis had played Sarasota on February 21, 1956, doing four shows the same day. The "Sarasota Herald-Tribune" ran advertisements for those shows but, after careful search, I've been unable to find a single line about them in the following days' editions of the same newspaper. Less than six months later, things had changed considerably, as we can see from the coverage done by the "St. Petersburg Times" of his August 7 shows.

And even more stuff.

Same as the Archie Dunlap article included above, the first clipping in this post appeared in only one of the editions of the "St. Petersburg Times" from August 8, 1956.

The text of the article is the same one you can read in one of the posts above (so it would be pointless to include it again here), but the headlines are different, and the photo is less cropped at the bottom, so you can almost see Elvis' guitar in its entirety.

As a bonus, an Elvis-related advertisement from the same day which features one of those great photos taken in Vegas earlier in the year.

Oh, and in case there are any Archie Dunlap fans around, here's a photo of him that didn't fit in the previous post.
