"282 Teddy Bears" - January 6, 1957

Fri Aug 30, 2013 3:54 am

On that date, Elvis appeared for the third and the last time on CBS's "The Ed Sullivan Show". This was the only one of his three appearances on that program that showed him from the waist up only.

As an opening, Elvis performed abridged versions of "Hound Dog", "Love Me Tender" and "Heartbreak Hotel". Later in the show, he would perform four more, complete, songs : "Don't Be Cruel", "Too Much" (which had just been released as a single), "When My Blue Moon Turns To Gold Again", and "Peace In The Valley" (which he would record one week later).

During the show, Elvis thanked his fans for sending him so many Christmas, and birthday, presents, and said : "I've got exactly two-hundred and eighty-two teddy bears".

Meanwhile, back in Canada, the show was broadcast live by several TV channels. Here's a sample :

Three days later, Bob Blackburn, "The Ottawa Citizen"'s TV and movie critic, signs a condescending review on Elvis' debut movie, "Love Me Tender":

"282 Teddy Bears" - January 6, 1957

This piece is not lost on Mary Louise Drew, an Elvis fan who, of course, also watched the Sullivan show the previous Sunday. She puts pen to paper and sends an irate letter to Blackburn, who mentions it in his "Televiews" column a few days later :

Of course, Blackburn has the last word. This was published the next week :

"I've got exactly two-hundred and eighty-two teddy bears".

And this was before the hit song "Teddy Bear" came out!

I wonder how many teddy bears he got for Christmas in 1957?

Exactly !

I've always wondered why people felt like sending him teddy bears in 1956. Anybody knows ?

Of course, for Christmas in 1957 he probably got several hundreds, or thousands, of them !

Thanks both for your comments !

My pleasure !

The text in Mary Louise Drew's letter seems to indicate that Blackburn wrote a negative review on Elvis' January appearance on Sullivan, too. But, believe me, I've searched for several hours and have been unable to find it. Maybe it wasn't published at all, and Drew's letter was only referring to Blackburn's review of "Love Me Tender".

Thanks !

Nope. They were given to children in the local Memphis hospital.

Nice post! About Elvis receiving teddy bears in 1956 - I think he mentioned he collected them in an interview from that year. I don't remember which interview, though.

Thought they would've gone somewhere. What was Elvis going to do with 282 Teddy Bears?!
