The arrival in Hawaii for Aloha when the colonel says "this way Elvis" and he pauses, ignores the colonel and goes to greet the fans.

The 'mmmm' moment in "Don't Be Cruel"

"Blow your brains out man" during "Stranger In My Own Home Town"

"If I took my hair out of my eyes I could see you....etc." Opening show, January 1970.

"Specialist Tulsa McLean"

Listening to the "Elvis Aron Presley" box for the first time and hearing Elvis cracking up during the "Datin'" out takes.

I've seen that mentioned here before. What does Elvis say? And what is the best way (audio recording/video) to hear him say it?

During Elvis On Tour when the Stamps are singing Sweet, Sweet Spirit. I just love the look on his face.

However, my favourite post so far is Frankie's!

WOW! Great thread!
It's funny when people talk about why Elvis was so loved by millions and millions of people... it is many of the little things that have had a profound effect on the individual fan. I guess we forget about that at times.
For me, the line/scene in King Creole... "Now you know what I do for an encore."
The ending of Can't Help Falling in Love in the rehearsal performance of Aloha From Hawaii when Elvis just has that lone necklace around the collar of his jumpsuit and he bellows the last words of the song... he looks amazing.
The "punch" at the end of Funny How Time Slips Away in Greensboro, NC in April 1972 when the Sweets fall back like they're taking the punch...
How he ends Bridge from the same show...
The drum "machine gun" in 1956's Hound Dog
Elvis' smile... at any time in his life
How his hair looked during the standup performances of the 68 special

I first heard that on Platinum very early on in my proper discovery of Elvis, and had never heard him singing that song before. Although it's a bit embarrassing to admit, I honestly could hardly move after hearing it. I managed to hit stop on the CD remote and just sat there for quite a while, gobsmacked.

It was one of the pivotal moments when I suddenly realised, okay, here is this guy everybody's heard of and heard some of, including me, he's so famous, yeah, so influential, yeah, and his face in a billion places over the years, but I suddenly realised at his best he was a total and complete genius of his art, and the best singer the world will ever see.

One of my other top little ones is the way he screams "napalm bomb" in Steamroller on the Memphis 74 album. Bombastic, melodramatic, maybe, but who cares, it's fantastic and always sends a musical shiver up my spine!

And I'm never gonna cease my wanderin'...

The image is one thing. A human being is another.

Image

Telling the band to "Watch me!" before the final guitar punch on See See Rider at Hampton Roads, 1972.

Image

Throwing the glass of water at Glen Hardin at the conclusion of his solo during Big Hunk O' Love, Aloha From Hawaii.

You guys that mentioned the look by John Wilkinson during the rehearsal of Web are spot on.

And I love this move during the Stranger in the Crowd rehearsal.

This. Awesomeness.

The scene in "Elvis On Tour" from Greensboro when Elvis turns around at the camera guy and says, "Sneakin' up on me man ..."

Priceless !!!

Oh, and "That's All Right" and the ending of "Polk Salad Annie", performed in 1970's MGM's, "That's The Way It Is" in rehearsal, just nails it.

If Elvis was ever close to being the "KING" of Rock 'N Roll in the 1970's, it was in those two scenes.

One of my favorite little things is the "Well" right before "Walk with me" in the song "Just A Little Bit".

Another is the way Elvis always looked over at the backup singers when he made a mistake or did something funny like when he flubs the line in Polk Salad Annie in the new MSG footage. I have always assumed he was looking at Estelle because she always reacted the most.

There are many other but those are the first that popped in my head.

IIRC, it is four syllables and starts with the letter "m." Turn up your volume and watch his face very carefully.

Elvis was a rascal!

Great thread everybody. During Can't Help Falling In Love the Rehearsal show, he is interacting with the crowd, then the kid asks him for the belt. Instead of blowing him off, he looks at the kid and shakes his head no. The next night he threw the belt in the audience. It's the one on one communication that Elvis had with the audience, that was part of what made him so special.

During TTWII rehearsals and Elvis is singing Oh Happy Day. The smile on James Burton during this song is priceless as he's watching Elvis the whole time. Great, great stuff!

One that always struck me was not necessarily an Elvis moment, but a moment of appreciation for Elvis. I'm referring to the look and smile he received from John Wilkinson as Elvis finished "How The Web Was Woven" while sitting at the piano during the rehearsals in TTWII.

That is one of those "little things" that I have always appreciated. That look and that smile from John speaks volumes.

I just saw that clip the other day and was thinking the same thing.

After finishing Ready Teddy(Love the whole tv performance)....the look on his face and that little pew...that made the fans scream.....

From the 1960 press conference where he is asked if he missed Rock`n Roll while in the army, and he tells them that he drove them tanks and that they actually Rock`n roll quite a bit....and he delivers a big grin.

Oh yes, that`s a great moment....not sure it has anything religious to it though......more like he`s just get carried away in the music.

This probably is an unpopular one but the other night I was watching the CBS Special for the first time in years, and it got to the scene in Jailhouse Rock, Elvis turns over points and as he is singing the verse " Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone,
Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang, the whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang " and just looses himself in laughter for a moment and the crowd hears it and just start cheering so loud, for some reason that put a smile on my face even in the darkest time. :) Great thread!

IIRC, CBS used that bit in one of the promos for the upcoming broadcast on Monday, October 3, 1977.

Like, I imagine, many other members of this forum, i remember the day my copy of 'Elvis: The Great Performances" finally arrived at my local video store. I was of course mesmerized by the rehearsal footage from ttwii and the concert footage from both films, but one moment that really just caught me by surprise was the cool half turns he uses to end "Just Pretend;" graceful, dynamic and super cool. It was an amazing reminder of just how much more varied his stage moves were than was even captured in the original films.
