What 5 songs do you wish Elvis would have sung in concert?

Fri Aug 16, 2013 9:56 pm

Well, we all know Elvis notoriously neglected a large body of his work when he returned to live concerts in 1969. I would like to know what 5 songs you wished he would have sung during the concert years? Songs must be related to Elvis, not anyone else's songs. Also, a verse here & there does not count. A song must be a complete version. here are my top 5.

Don't (far and away the most desired by me)
A Fool Such As I
Return to Sender
His Latest Flame
Surrender

Just bubbling under these would be Viva Las Vegas for Vegas shows only. Would have been a hoot.

Blue Moon of Kentucky
Good Rockin' Tonight
Return to Sender (he performed it once or twice only in the 70's)
Viva Las Vegas (it matched perfectly to so many Vegas concerts)
Guitar Man

Returning to concerts in 1969?

Here are five from each decade, out of hundreds of possibilities:

1950s
Good Rockin' Tonight (imagine this as a show opener!)
Baby, Let's Play House
When It Rains It Pours
Crawfish
I Got Stung

1960s
Fame and Fortune
Milky White Way
Follow That Dream
I Need Somebody To Lean On
A Little Less Conversation

1970s
Holly Leaves and Christmas Trees
I Shall Be Released
Always on My Mind
Just a Little Bit
Are You Sincere?

I think he should have completely revamped his lineup every year. Meaning that each year would be an entirely different selection of songs than the year before. And I think he should have stuck with his two 1961 concert sound, and NEVER have adapted the Las Vegas schmaltz. Well his 1960-1970 season was not TOO bad, but it just got more grandiose after that.

I'm not a huge expert on the live 1970's setlists--for example, did he ever do "Trouble/Guitar Man" or "You'll Never Walk Alone"?

So Close, Yet So Far (From Paradise)
C'mon Everybody
Long Black Limousine
Edge Of Reality
You'll Think Of Me

I agree with that. Would have been nice to have that sax on stage like in 1961 to maybe do songs like Sender. In fact, that Vegas schmaltz could be listed as a mishap in one of my other topics. Didn't need Joe G orchestra and all those backup singers. George Harrison was right on the money when he said this.

5songs is a bit hard to choose because there's a hellava lot he should have done, instead of all that MOR crap is was doing on stage in the 70's....

But here's the 5 i would have like him to have done:
1. Don't.
2. Santa Clause Is Back In Town
3. I Need Your Love Tonight
4. Hi-Heel Sneakers
5. Wearin' That Loved On Look

Yes maybe I should have said 10 , but I was afraid I'd get a response with Datin' or something! I'm glad we have another 'Don't' fan here.

"Don't" is one of the best ballads Elvis ever did! And why he never did this is beyond me...one of leiber/stollers finest examples of songwriting craftmanship. The closest we got is when Elvis rehearsed it for MGM's TTWII movie in 1970.

Yes, i can understand you only selecting 5 songs, because there's always one or two people who will come up with a crap song.

I've seen Wearin That Loved On Look a few times here also. That would have been a great choice in 1969 to promote his current LP. He had a chestnut here that kicked off his first major studio album in years and chose to never do it. Would have worked well live too I think.

Wish he had've done more of the '69 stuff live. It surprises me that he dumped "In The Ghetto" & "Don't Cry Daddy" so early.
