Elvis Week 2017

Wed Jun 26, 2013 2:39 pm

Well, it's freakin' early but I already booked our trip to Memphis in august 2017. There seemed to be a run for the only 40 open spaces the Dutch fanclub Elvis For Everyone has for that trip. It's first come first served, so I could not wait any longer :)

Because there is no way to find a baby sit for our boys 4 years in advance, we decided to take them with us! We figured by that time they're old enough (11 and 13) to see 'where they came from' (I met my wife in Memphis in 2002). It's still a long way to go. To make the waiting a little bit easier we're also going (without the boys) next january :D :D :D

Anybody here who also has plans to go to Elvis Week 2017?

How did you do that?

Elvis.com only allows a year & a half in advance.

We were thinking of doing the same thing but I found you can't book more than a year & a half in advance online.

No, I decided it would be more fun to stay at home and knock out my own teeth with a hammer and chisel.

Obviously I think Elvis Week is a great thing, I've been a few times and will be there this year. I'm okay with the event as an acknowledgement of his passing or an annual memorial. I'm not so comfortable however about how the so-called 'milestone' years are dealt with. Why is it so exciting to celebrate a person's passing on such a grand scale every five years? 2017 will be 40 years, why is that so anticipated? Why was 20, 25, 30, or 35 equally anticipated or exciting. I don't get that. I think it's slightly more interesting...for lack of a better word, to recognize milestones with the birthday, as in 'wow Elvis would've been 75 what would that have been like', but I think that's just slightly less popular because the birthday falls during the winter and not during traditional tourist season. Just my opinion.

I see what you mean. I've been to Elvis Week in 'slower' years like 2003. But I kind of like it to be busy. Meeting other fans from lots of different countries is just more interesting. But you're right about 'celebrating' the milestone. That's kind of crazy. I'd like to think we're all celebrating his life and what he still means to us.

In July it'll be 40th anniversary death of Bruce Lee & it's gonna be shown live online from Hong Kong.....round numbers just feel more important somehow.
