Opinions on soundboard re-releases

Sun Jun 16, 2013 9:01 pm

The last couple of years on the bootleg front we have seen mostly reissues of earlier released soundboards. There have been MANY of them. This is a partial list of the reissues. I would like to know your opinions whether you think they are worthy upgrades sound-wise, or not. Excluding the inherent worth the reissues have on their own merit (show quality, sung rarities..) when one not owns the originals. So just the surplus (or not) compared to the original releases, which ones do you think are significantly better, which offer no upgrade and instead offer more or less the same as before, and which offer worse sound than before. I know for myself, as in most cases I have (had) both, but I would like to know opinions from other EP soundboard junkies.

Highlighted in blue are worthy upgrades I know about -- you should be getting them if you are a super-fan.

Highlighted in red are astounding upgrades that any Elvis fan must own.

These are the ones I have found particularly worthwhile from your list.

Because both the sound and presentation are far superior to the FTD.

Is there any difference in SQ between the Backdraft release "REBOOKED" and the two Madison releases of the Jan/Feb 1970 engagements? Also, I'd give my left nut for a copy of Prodigy... better yet (and much less painful) that show would make a fantastic FTD release!!!

I still have Opening Night 1969 too, which is the same show, but is not as good sound-wise or packaging-wise as the fabulous re-release.. (one of the best Elvis live bootlegs ever, if not THE best).

Keep the opinions coming, they're most welcome!

Re: Opinions on soundboard re-releases

I've slowly but surely become fed up with the so called upgrades. Aside from the Boston title, I can't recall any "upgrade" that has made me flip, save A New Kind of Rhythm although being binaural it is really a new format. It may have taken 15 years but it seems FTD has finally cornered the bootleggers to a large degree in terms of new material nowadays, and it is FTD whom we should all now be turning turn rather than bullcrap releases like the latest 'Mood Swings' (fcuk me!).
An upgrade to me is like mono to stereo or multi track, or something significant, not Colonel Parker tactics. Current 'upgrades' serve those fans who missed out on the mid/late '90s, early 2000s. Happy to be proven wrong as I love my Presley product!

Re: Opinions on soundboard re-releases

Mon Jun 17, 2013 1:23 pm

Yes, like I have said many times, the bootleg scene died when Madison left. They were outstanding in every respect: beautiful artwork, intelligent liner notes, carefully chosen material, hell, even their ALBUM TITLES were better than the rest! It was a damn shame they left the scene, but arguably they didn't have much material left to release anyway. I love FTD but always thought the bootleggers were a healthy competetion and made the Elvis scene more entertaining. But there is no bootleg scene anymore -- just a bunch of random amateurs doing reissues and rotten audience recordings. Of course, some like Straight Arrow are doing something worthwhile. But I don't need any more audience recordings in my collection. I have two or three because they feature rare songs, like "Pieces Of My Life". That's enough.

To get on topic, my favourite reissue is "One Night Only!". That's one of the greatest live bootlegs ever.

The times go on and there is nothing more to release. If new collectors are interesting in that kind of Elvis-World. Why not? But IMO there will come a lot from FTD. Why buy the same show many times when the original release is in the collection? But that's the game! Re-releases from RCA/Sony/BMG and some from FTD will always come. No reason to think about for me.

If you stop buying all these re-re-re-re-releases, they will no longer flood the market.

That label just copied the Madison CDs.

No need to get extreme about Prodigy, it shows up on eBay now and then.

For example, this one from March 2013 -->
Elvis Presley - The Return Of A Prodigy - Gravel

You just did that to tease me... :(

It's a link from March, you should have known the bidding would be over by June! But my suggestion is true. Just check into eBay about once or twice a month and search on that title, sooner or later one will come up. Then, go get it!

All so very true about Madison, they were as good as it gets, but let's not forget that Follow That Dream, the official fan's label, continues to come up with rare, interesting and unreleased live and studio tapes. As for Straight Arrow, I just wish they could find some high-quality audience tapes from tours in 1970 (February, March, September, November) and 1971 (November) and give them a home.

Here Here!

There are some superb non-Vegas shows from February, March, September and November 1970!!!

Where, where?

I really regret not getting Bringing It All Back Home when it came out. I was so disappointed that Madison no longer existed. When the Venus label came out, I had no way of knowing if they were a quality label or not. But I really wanted those Memphis shows, and now I don't see FTD ever releasing them, especially now that they will have two March '74 shows available.

It will be three March '74 shows total released by FTD.
