New Touchdown - Impossible (Las Vegas, 1971-08-28 MS)

Tue Jun 11, 2013 12:05 pm

Cover.jpg
The new release by Touchdown Productions will be the midnight show from August 28, 1971. The previously unreleased recording was taken from a 1st generation copy of the original audience recorded tape. One of the highlights - next to others - is a strong version of "I just can't help believin'" which Elvis only did four times in 1971! The soundquality is of good quality for an audience recording! As usual the CD will be packaged with a beautiful designed 16-page booklet.

Oh wow. This looks like a unique release! How's the sound?

I don't care for the title, but the folks at Touchdown have released some pretty decent sounding shows. I will be picking this one up. I'll use a magic marker to cross out the title and make up my own.

I think I'll call it, "Still Can't Help Believin'".

All of you can send me your copy when you get it and I will mark out the title and send it back to you.

The title seems indeed somewhat unimaginative and a strange selection for this show.
With "I just can't help believin'" included in this show as a rather rare track for this time I'd assume they would have chosento either promote the release using a line from this songs lyrics or coming up with something appealing. Anything.
"Impossible" gives the impression of a place holder that they forgot to take care of while finishing the cover.
Hopefully the content will be better, especially the sound quality. Looking forward to giving this CD a spin.

Actually, Elvis could be pretty impossible sometimes. ;-)

I agree the disc name could be better. For one thing, the song in question is called "It's Impossible." If the B.J. Thomas cover of "I Just Can't Help Believing" is one of the show highlights -- in itself a bit sad -- using a variation of the name would probably have been the way to go.

Looking at the set list, it's irksome to consider that Elvis Presley is covering the huge, 1971 Perry Como hit. Yes, there is a connection -- Sid Wayne wrote the English lyric to the Mexican original -- but a desire to do this ballad showed how Elvis' radar was being blunted by far too many shows in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe.

As for the show, what does Ciscoking think?

I think "It's impossible" is a pretty good song. When Elvis performed it he transformed it and it sounded extremely emotional and better than Como did it. I'm glad Elvis did it.

Soundwise this release is obviously on a par with

or

which were released some 15+ years ago.

I'm really looking forward to this new CD.

Yes, absolutely. Especially when looking back at what he had done previously on this very stage and on what high level his shows were until only a year earlier.
Something had changed and not for the better.

It might well be a good show but Elvis does seem rather in a hurry.

You might give the Como version another listen. He's a great singer and this song was perfect for him. Elvis does this extremely well but I can't say he betters Como's version. Give another artist credit when credit is due.

In the past TOUCHDOWN came up with some great releases and this one will be no different. I'm certainly looking forward to hearing this show. :D

At many spots the tape runs not properly so that Elvis sounds droning.....
