First press article

Sun May 19, 2013 6:59 am

Going through my files recently I dug out the first article about Elvis in the Memphis press. Ger Rijff sent it to me years ago so I thought I'd put it up.

Great, as always. The journalist recalled Elvis as being incredibly shy. Just two days later he was on stage at the Shell, and the story began.

Do you have a scan of the alternate image from this July 28, 1954 interview? Elvis looks more surly in it.

No I don't think so. Just the full, uncropped version of that one that Davide had that I cropped to replicate the one in the article. Brian mentioned having put the article up also and I see he has the full photo posted http://brian56.dk/50s/1954/5407/540727.html. I didn't see an entry for the 28th though, but he's listing the wrong one (the alternate) used for the piece on the 28th.

bripet56 is likely correct that the interview and photos were taken on Tuesday, July 27, 1954, as the Memphis Press-Scimitar was an afternoon paper. But the alternate (surly) image was not used in July, but later in the year, in another article.

Great and historical article, thank you.

Interesting to note that it's Sam and not Marion given the credit for taking Elvis' name.

Thanks George, I don't often notate on the inaccuracies but prefer to post them as written.

Right, unless there were different editions using the alternate image the one I posted was correct, which would be the same as the one he posted uncropped.
Here is a closer crop of the original piece

I suspect scribe Edwin Howard was a pal of Sam's, and may have spoken to him before it went to print. Or Marion Keisker was being deferential when escorting Presley to the interview, and speaking with the reporter.

Nice--thanks for posting.

I confess I haven't read any complete biographies in a while--and I know my aging memory isn't what it used to be--but the article states that Sam Phillips was there and took down Elvis' info. I remembered Marion taking down the info because Sam wasn't there that day.

I'll have to dig out some books and read again......

The story has always been that Marion was the one who made note of the young man "good ballad singer - hold."

But debate continues on whether Sam was at 706 Union at all on July 18, 1953. My feeling is he was not, but biographer Peter Guralnick leans towards Sam being there. And I'm sure in the upcoming Phillips biography Peter is creating, he will continue to push this view.

How I wish Elvis had set the record straight on this. All of his known comments indicate it was Marion to whom he owed his being "discovered" by the owner of the Memphis Recording Service and Sun Records.

Thanks Doc and James for pointing out my mistake on http://brian56.dk/50s/1954/5407/540727.html

I switched the photos around and forgot to switch the text as well. It has been corrected now.

James, I have chosen to put all ads, articles and photo for a specific show on the date show took place, no matter if the articles were published before or after the show.
I thought it would make it easier to keep things together. Beneath each ad or article I will write from which newspaper and date, if known, the ads and articles are.

A new and exciting section will be published on my website in about a week or two.

Sincerely
Brian
