Damn, looks like it was a FTD mistake to include 'Dominic' since it was also a posthumous release.drjohncarpenter wrote: To include "extra" info, such as posthumous releases from the 1980s, would be a mistake. That's why it is not there.

Indeed a very enjoyable release, far better than expected.Ciscoking wrote:I really enjoyed this release...the sessions have a loose atmosphere and everyone seems to have a good time..even Dominic has its charm..in the context of the sessions it just fits. unexpected nice release..thanks Ernst and Roger !

Bullsh*t.
If "Dominic" + the outtakes were NOT included on this FTD, there would've been a RIOT.
The EP release information from the 80's that is "missing" from the FTD booklet, is not on the same planet, as a song that was a part of the sessions that is the focus of the FTD release.
C'mon now, people . . .

Hi Mike,
first of all thanks for the inspiration and once more for your upload. Unfortunately your rip is kinda distorted and there wasn't really much to improve but I tried it anyway by using ClickRepair, decrease the level, add a little puncher to it and speed correct it by approx. 3,5 percent. Here's the result:
Elvis Presley - Stay Away (Original single edit).wav (File size: 22 MB)
http://www66.zippyshare.com/v/3802634/file.html
I remembered a few months back I did a rip of my PICKWICK pressing of the "Almost In Love" album, that's where I took this one from (sounds okay for a fourty-two year old record):
Elvis Presley - Stay Away (Mono).wav (File size: 22 MB)
http://www66.zippyshare.com/v/76765621/file.html
Enjoy!

Spot-on, Rich_TCB. As every keen fan well knows, "Dominic" was a part of the "Stay Away, Joe" sessions, and included in the 1968 film.Rich_TCB wrote:Bullsh*t.

Again, FTD notes are composed with a look at Elvis Presley's active career.
However, a few members here get their jollies by trying to "correct" my astute observations, and almost always end up looking stupid and petty.

Hi luckyjackson1!! .
I´m sorry, I don´t know why it sounded distorted. The rip (Wav) was taken from a near-mint copy of the U.S.A Stay Away,Joe/U.S.Male original 60´s single , but of the 2 examples posted by you I prefer the rip from the Almost In Love Lp, it sounds more natural. Thank you for taking the time to do this! . Bye for now .luckyjackson1 wrote:Hi Mike,

It's not a top-shelf tune in my book, although I do love the versions we officially have of Elvis busting into the lyrics (or grunts) of "Heartbreak Hotel," "I Got A Woman" and "Surfin' Bird." It seems he was trying to improve it.skatterbrane wrote:I think the song Goin' Home is every bit as good as the song Stay Away. And I REALLY like All I Needed Was The Rain.

Re: FTD Stay Away, Joe Excellent!!!!!!.
Without having read all the books or listened to all the outtakes, what was going on with Elvis at this session?
From what I've heard, he was a bit raunchy and crude between takes. Were there some medications involved in his behavior on that date?

Re: FTD Stay Away, Joe Excellent!!!!!!.
Elvis was a little more ... stressed at the January 15-16, 1968 Nashville sessions than the one held three month earlier, on October 1, 1967. Jordanaires member Gordon Stoker recalled that the excessive, locker-room profanity in January was completely unlike anything he's seen from Elvis in twelve years of session work. There were apparent references to "extracurricular activities" in-between early takes of "Goin' Home," but only some of these have surfaced, from a very poor-sounding acetate. Reed, Jarvis and Presley are all gone now, so who knows what they were laughing about?HoneyTalkNelson wrote:Without having read all the books or listened to all the outtakes, what was going on with Elvis at this session?

With hindsight, it seems Presley was quietly freaking out about his impending fatherhood (in about two weeks Lisa would arrive), the terrible material brought by publisher Freddy Bienstock to the hybrid soundtrack-studio session, and perhaps even his recent birthday (33).
That the two non-soundtrack tunes were off-the cuff ("Too Much Monkey Business," "U.S. Male") and inspired by the presence of Jerry Reed spoke volumes about Elvis' animosity towards his publishing representatives. As for the two soundtrack submissions ("Stay Away," "Goin' Home"), he dutifully cut them, but did not regard either as anything special -- his derision on the outtakes was that palpable.
Luckily for us, the non-soundtrack recordings were A+ work from all involved, despite the general studio situation.

That's very interesting. While budgetary restrictions have made it difficult for me to afford many of the FTD releases, this is one that I'll have to pick up. I like the songs and it's the only 1960's Elvis feature that I saw first-run. It played with an MGM heist film called THE SPLIT.
Thank you John for your detailed response.

The Reed influence elevates all the material from the January date, and it's obvious the Presley arrangement of "Too Much Monkey Business" is borrowed from Jerry's recent recording of "Tupelo Mississippi Flash" -- Reed was probably the one who suggested using it.
So, in essence, Elvis covers a Chuck Berry classic using the arrangement from a song that was inspired by ... Elvis Presley!

I'm gonna tell you a story that's all about
This job I had one time as a talent scout
I had a hard day at the office and the boss wasn't in town
The day this hairy-legged guitar picker just happened to come around
Well, he walks into my office with a great big grin
And folks, that's where my story really begins
He said, son, my name is Beauregard Rippy
I come to you from Tupelo, Mississippi
I write songs and I sing like a bird
I play licks on my guitar like you ain't never heard
But I'm down on my luck, things are just a little slack
I got a quarter in my pocket and the shirt on my back
But you buy me some supper, give me a place I can sleep
Said I'll sing you some songs that'll knock your hat in the creek
I got talent, boy, said back home they call me "the Tupelo Mississippi Flash"
Well, I knew I was in a room with some kind of a nut
When he pulled out that pack of used cigarette butts
So that's when I told him "We can't use you today"
So I hand the boy a dollar and I send him on his way
Well, the boss got back and we both had a laugh
When I told him 'bout "the Tupelo Mississippi Flash"
And pretty soon I had this story circulatin' around
About this Mississippi nut that we had in our town
I said, "Watch him everybody, the boy's squirrelly"
He walks around, callin' himself "the Tupelo Mississippi Flash"
Well, then it happened one day while I was drivin' to my home
I just a-happened to have my car radio on
When I heard a jockey ravin' 'bout a brand-new smash
By a kid called the "Tupelo Mississippi Flash"
Why, I almost wrecked my automobile
I went through a red light, I hit a traffic cop
Why, well my story's got an ending and it's short and sweet
The boss man, he fired me and left me out in the street
But I got a new job now, and I'm learnin' real fast
I'm-a drivin' the bus for "the Tupelo Mississippi Flash"
And his Cadillac, I'm drivin' that for him too
And that yacht he's got, and his aeroplane
Heh-heh, well "chauffeur, so good" I always say
Eh, "the Tupelo Mississippi..." who ever heard of him?
Why, I'll kill the boy ...
"Tupelo Mississippi Flash" is also significant as a song "rumoured" to have been cut at Presley's January 1968 RCA Nashville sessions. It most likely people who heard Reed laying down that same sweet guitar licks on Elvis' incredible version of "Too Much Monkey Business" got confused. Or maybe Reed jammed on "Tupelo Mississippi Flash" in between takes.

Re: FTD Stay Away, Joe Excellent!!!!!!.
I don't have the record yet, but from the outtakes I have heard, Elvis seems to be dealing with the stress by . . . some de-stressing. We all know about the crude references and so forth, but what is more provoking is the continuous and intense giggling. Now, of course, Elvis was always laughing, but it DID sound different. It sounded like I've heard from back when I was in school, in college, and people would put on the White Album, and get very hungry, and giggle absurdly, and say strange things and "hear colors."
Well, that's what it sounded like to me, from what I've heard thus far. I guess we have to admit that a lot of people want to listen more closely . . . see what they hear in it. (My copy is in transit. So, maybe it'll clear some things up?)
And yes, many people are no longer with us, but there may be enough on tape, and enough interview material to let us know how Elvis "de-stressed" during those sessions.
The great thing is that he got himself together by mid-year, and started a whole new career. So, in a way, it's just a footnote. The whole kookiness aspect. I wished it could have stayed that way - if only Elvis didn't get involved with more potent, and perhaps less entertaining de-stressing substances.
Just imho.

Mike Windgren had a good point about the obscure Australian release.
Yes, FTD COULD have mentioned it in the booklet trivia.
Perhaps FTD need not have included the info but there's no need belittling him and stating falsities along the way.
And of course 'Dominic' was going to be there - but that wasn't my point.

Hi there!! .
If you listened carefully after take 11, the recording engineer states: that´s sounds great at which Elvis answer: yeah, it´s a good number man, it´s a good number, cool.....
Please take the time to listen to it again or is it that you haven't received your copy yet? . Bye for now .
Dear Doc, are you sure what you are saying about the flow of the recording of Stay Away? . Have you listened to all the outtakes of Stay Away? . I did!!!!!!!, well to be fair to all that are available, my personal perception is that he enjoyed a lot the recording of this particular nice song.drjohncarpenter wrote:As for the two soundtrack submissions ("Stay Away," "Goin' Home"), he dutifully cut them, but did not regard either as anything special -- his derision on the outtakes was that palpable

Re: FTD Stay Away, Joe Excellent!!!!!!.
When I listened first to the song "Too Much Monkey Business", I couldn't believe it how great music Elvis did again. For me this was, together with Guitar Man, Big Boss man and High Heel Sneakers the ressurection of Elvis Presley and that was before the comeback special. Too bad that he didn't perform Too Much Monkey Business live in concerts or in the 68 TV special
