Made my own version of "Elvis at Stax"........and plays it a lot these days
1-18 is the masters and the rest is outtakes.

Just like I wrote before, Roger Semon told me in 2002 that material that had already been remastered for FTD gets remastered once again for the wide spread public (no-noise etc.).a mess of polk salad wrote:How do you mean? Surely the outtakes will sound even better DSD'd.luckyjackson1 wrote:Don't expect a better sound quality on the outtakes than on the FTD's (rather the opposite )...
If you're lucky, they'll sound the same.
Let's hope that eleven years later this is not the case anymore.
All I'd like to know is what fades they used this time for the outtakes and which songs are clipped or have mastering faults... (gosh, I already sound like Tony.. ).

Being like Tony.. is the end result (a bi-product, if you would) of us collectors becoming jaded from years of a never ending stream of repeat "far-from-perfect" CD's from both official and bootleg releases. I predict one day all of us on this forum will eventually end up like Tony. Sad, but true. (No offence, Tony..)

It will be interesting to learn if that is true, since the outtakes were remixed for the Raised On Rock, Good Times, and Promised Land FTDs anyway.frus75 wrote:They say the outtakes have been remixed.

It's probably the deluxe edition with a different cover.frus75 wrote:They say the outtakes have been remixed.luckyjackson1 wrote:Just like I wrote before, Roger Semon told me in 2002 that material that had already been remastered for FTD gets remastered once again for the wide spread public (no-noise etc.).a mess of polk salad wrote:How do you mean? I don't think the outtakes got remixed for this release again. Just remastered (for the worse). Hope I'm wrong.

The $72 limited edition is a Japanese import.

Does the tracklisting differ from the regular edition?

No, but you'll get Japanese written songsheets for each track.

The ones that come to my mind are the DSD remasters of his first three albums and the theme CD's from quite some years ago (2005/2006?).

DSD is a high resolution digital storage technology. It is not a mastering trick that magically makes things sound better on CDs.

Re: Elvis At Stax: 40th Anniversary (3 CD)
I'm optimistic that this upcoming set will be sonically great, as for artwork, I like the picture of Elvis, (even tho it's not a '73 Elvis), it's just not that appealing.
And these titles they come up with, "Elvis at Stax" ... The average person who walks around and decides to check out an Elvis cd and sees , "Elvis at Stax" and says, "What and where the hell is Stax ?" Lmao ....
Unless, of course, your a hardcore or music enthusiast, these titles are just as bad as the artwork.

Re: Elvis At Stax: 40th Anniversary (3 CD)
So, what happened with, "I Am An Elvis Fan" ?midnightx wrote:Typically an expansive set under the banner of an "anniversary" title suggests the material should be historically significant. Rarely does a label celebrate the anniversary of mediocre sessions. If you look beyond your hyper-sensitive, defensive point of view - you will see that this "anniversary" set of "STAX" material is a marketing ploy to entice buyers and a somewhat disingenuous way to move mediocre 70's product. As pointed out, Sony is a business, and clearly this was the best way it could try to create a buzz and sales potential around these inconsistent recordings from an era in Elvis' career that doesn't typically sell big mainstream figures in 2013. Not everything is an attack on Elvis; sometimes the realities are what they are.poormadpeter wrote:Does something have to be historically significant in order for it to receive a decent re-release?midnightx wrote:If one re-reads the Stax chapter in Ernst's "A Life In Music," there isn't much there that suggests that Ernst "appreciates" the "historical significance" of the Stax sessions.Winston wrote:The historical significance of Presley’s work at Stax is appreciated by such music scholars as Peter Guralnick, the award-winning author of Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley (1994) and Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley (1999); and producer Ernst Mikael Jørgensen, respected director of RCA’s Presley catalog for over two decades, and author of the critical research guide, Elvis Presley: A Life In Music (St. Martin’s Press, 1998).
Jørgensen has long been concerned with doing justice to the Stax sessions, which were never acknowledged by the artist's record label RCA as a unified whole.
Supposedly, over 250,000 voters and the disc didn't sell a quarter of that figure ...

That's true. Then on the other hand a casual fan will be educated on STAX through the release. Maybe check out the FTD related STAX releases...minkahed wrote:I'm optimistic that this upcoming set will be sonically great, as for artwork, I like the picture of Elvis, (even tho it's not a '73 Elvis), it's just not that appealing.

Maybe "Fourty years ago in Memphis... Elvis At Stax" would have been a more suitable (if longer) name.
