The official RCA release of 3-21-1961 is my go-to source:

Image

Elvis Aron Presley (RCA/BMG 07863 67455, 1998)
Note: this is the CD version of the 1980 LP box set.

If any of the show was filmed, nothing has surfaced in more than 50 years since it happened.

Doctor, yer outta the loop as they say.

That is an old release.

That release has been topped soundwise.

The best to-date release is the version by MRS.

It's not a bootleg, though not authorized by Sony.

Still the best cover artwork was for the original boot LP version of this show.

Without a superior source, that is pretty much impossible. They simply tweaked the existing RCA release.

Tweaking the existing releases is a pretty common proactice for at least one "respectable" bootleg label (yes, the pebbly one) and it seems their actions do not bother some memebers here, it's rather the opposite.

Interesting. Since you chose to bring up this side-issue, can you explain how this type of "tweaking" leads to previously-unheard material?

It usually does not. Here are some examples:

A Day In Dayton – it did not
Get Down And Dirty
Good To Be Back – it did not
Hilton’s All Shook Up – it did not
Plugged In & Geared Up
Sittin' On The Top Of The World – it did not
Snowbird Revisited – it did not
Spanish Eyes By Request – it did not
Star-Spangled Spectacular Bicentennial ’76 – it did not
The Brightest Star On Sunset Boulevard
The Elvis Summer Festival Continues At Full Blast – it did not
The Return Of A Prodigy – it did not
Vegas Rhythm – it did not (except of 20 seconds of the Closing Vamp)

Back on topic, though.

I agree with ekenee that the MRS's version is the best edition of the show so far. Still the release of "For God And Country" may soon change that.

The MRS release is the best sounding version of this show by A COUNTRY MILE - buy it its a no-brainer, even corrected all the drop-outs too.

The Elvis Summer Festival Continues At Full Blast – it did not
The Return Of A Prodigy – it did not
Vegas Rhythm – it did not (except of 20 seconds of the Closing Vamp =- Which was lifted from the beginning to make out it was longer - how sad )

Yes the lovely Doc and his twisted views on things never cease to amaze and his sleeve notes for "God And Country" remain on the floor, but no doubt in a hope Gravel will get around to picking them up for a shock resurrection :smt005

MRS sound wins hands down no matter the source.

I lost respect for MRS when they released "Greatest Live Hits of the 50's", but I have to admit their release of the Hawaii '61 show is the best sounding to my ears.

Carlos, in my opinion (and in the opinion of all of my acquaintances who love Elvis), the MRS one is by far the best sounding version. Without a shadow of doubt.
At the time they issued the bootleg LP and the official box, I bought them both and they were fine to listen to. But MRS made a great job by improving the sound and by bringing new life to that historic concert - the best known Elvis concert for me-.
You only have to listen to All Shook Up, before MRS and with MRS, and you'll understand.
This version of the 61 Hawaii concert belongs to my ten desert island dics.
And if a better sounding one comes to light one day, I'll buy it again...

"Such A Night In Pearl Harbor", by Memphis Recording Service, is by far the best.

The deluxe book-type presentation is worth the price alone, even without the CD. The sound on the CD is much improved on previous releases.

I think we have a 'landslide' verdict here, folks !

I am serious with this question, since I have very little first hand knowledge of so-called "bootlegs."
Are the MRS releases actually "legal"? And if they are "legal" would that include purchasing them here in the United States? Thanks

It's Impossible?

5,000 Elvis fans can't be wrong.

To tweak or not to tweak, that is the question.

Whatever they did, improved the sound. And it needed a tweaking.

Don't get all caught up in semantics.

You are a very choosey and stubborn fan.

Just buy it and enjoy it.

It seems to me that these releases offered new material and/or greatly-improved quality. That makes them very worthwhile to the serious Presley collector. That other label has never offered even a minute of new material on CD, just tweaked audio from official and unofficial sources. They do have pretty packages, though, and you enjoy them, and that's fine. Whatever floats your boat. ;-)

One last comment from me, carloselvis.

Do note that I simply replied to your query that my go-to disc, the original digital source, is on RCA's Elvis Aron Presley.

The recent tweaking of this original source by a grey market label "fills in" a few audio noises, sounds that are actually a part of the 1961 concert recording, which is one reason it is not my "go-to" disc. I don't want my copy of this legendary show to be altered.

And, unlike what others have said, you can pick up a copy of Elvis Aron Presley, a fabulous 4 CD set, for about $44.00, which is a bargain, and well worth it.

Amazon.com: Buying Choices: Elvis Aron Presley: The Silver Box Set
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00000637U/ref=dp_olp_used

The collection also includes most of a very good Dallas show from June 1975, a concert from May 1956 in Las Vegas, and lots of neat studio outtakes and other cool live tracks from 1968-1977. It also has a beautiful booklet filled with color photos and terrific liner notes.

Anyway, I sincerely hope my answers are helpful.

You can purchase from Amazon.co.uk if you live in the U.S. - see the link below:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Such-Night-Pearl-Harbor-Page/dp/B00745HD9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367428193&sr=8-1&keywords=elvis+pearl+harbor

Memphis Recording Service (MRS) is what some consider a grey-market product. While it is legal to purchase this product from that site if you live in the United States, it is not legal to sell the MRS product in the U.S. - due to the laws in the U.S. and the U.K. being different in that respect. While I'm not a fan of some of the products MRS has issued in the past, I did in fact purchase this CD and I'm not sorry I did. It's a beautiful package and the CD is certainly a bonus... there are some sound fluctuations repaired from the RCA release making for a more pleasant listening experience.

That is a rediculous and inconsistant arguement.

If Ernst "alters" something you look the other way and refuse to comment.

The sound is improved, so get over it. The very old RCA release is a dinosaur in comparison.

And you are incorrect in that they have released new material in which you have been corrected before in other threads and you keep repeated this same mistake.
