What if ''We're gonna move'' was sung in the 70's

Mon Apr 22, 2013 2:26 pm

this crossed my mind today, what if elvis sung this song in the 70's its not a tough song, it could have been great with elvis on his guitar and JD doing the ''there's a leak'' verses.
I know it's an odd song choice, but it could have worked

I think it would sound kinda ridiculous. The lyrics are... silly, to put it mildly. I can imagine a poor country boy singing the song (Elvis in "Love Me Tender") but not a flamboyant, jumpstuit-clad superstar. Unless it would have been a refernece to some of the not-so-spectacula venues and arenas Elvis performed at thru the '70s.

Well there's a leak in this old building
Yes, there's a leak in this old building
Well there's a leak in this old building
We're gonna move to a better home

Well there's a hole in the roof where the rain pours in

A hole in the floor where it drops right out again
Well there's a leak in this old building
Well there's a leak in this old building
Well there's a leak in this old building
We're gonna move to a better home

Well there's a crack across the ceiling
Yes there's a crack across the ceiling
Well there's a crack across the ceiling
We're gonna find us a better home

Well .... that was fun....

Now I'll go and look if there's anything else to read on the forum. This'll be a hard one to follow....

It was a bad song in the 50s, it would have been a bad song in the 70s.

If I remember correctly, Elvis opened up with this song when I saw him in June 1974.

I wonder how fast he would have sung it, and if he'd make it to the 2nd verse, or just repeat the 1st verse over and over..

can you imagine if he opened up his concerts with this one instead of CC rider? picture it, 2001 song, the horns, girls screaming,he walks out, he poses and points his fingers, then he walks up to the mic and starts singing "well there's a leak in this old building"...

It could only have worked if Elvis dressed in demin overalls, shirtless and JD was beating on a bucket with a rubber chicken... then yes, I agree, it could have worked!!

What if Elvis had sung "Love Song of the Year" at Sun?

It could have worked.

I would have rather he be bold and innovative to try something like this, 'Ladies & Gentlemen, here's a song from my first movie', then some of the stuff he was doing on stage night after night. The show needed some off the wall things like this (and of course a lot of his other back catalog) to shake it out of its rut a bit. Yeah it could have been goofy, but then so was Little Darlin. I never got that one when he had a to of 50's songs of his own to try.

C'mon, get it right. It's "Tender Feeling" without an "s".

Elvis most certainly could've/should've sung "Summer Kisses, Winter Tears" since June 21 was the first day of summer in 1977!
What was he thinking to allow himself to exclude that gem?!

I would imagine Elvis had totally forgotten about that song or wouldn't even remembered recording it .

I would have preferred Let Me to We're Gonna Move. He could have done the same dance he did in the movie. :smt002

The "Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel" medley could've/should've been replaced by a "Poor Boy/Let Me" medley.

Colonel Parker should have insisted on it!

But, he'd be telling the crowd that the roof of the arena might be leaking. And it's bad luck to open an umbrella in the house. I mean, if somebody was singing that in a "building," I'd get a little concerrned. rjm (how do you do carriage returns on this thing? anybody got a Samsung TV keyboard?)

I thought this sounded like a silly topic when I read the title. But it has made me realise that with the gospel background of the song it could almost have fit into a jam-session type of situation, as with "I John", "You Better Run" etc in 1972. It's not too different from them and on the surface even makes more sense than the likes of "three gates in the east, three gates in the north......" or rockin' my soul down in the bosom of Abraham or even "you better run, run when I say..." It might even have been nice in a jam session, but not on stage. Uh uhhh, no way!

Little Darlin' wasn't a super serious song either, and in fact was kind of silly in it's own right, and if there ever happened to be a leak in the roof of the building that Elvis was playing, then We're gonna move would have been a perfect song choice! :smt020

People here often criticise `sub-standard' songs from the 70s, Let Me shows there were also sub-standard songs in the 50s.
